Skipper joins his boys in Cape Town
The All Blacks received a major boost on Monday when they learnt that
captain Tana Umaga would be available for their crucial Vodacom Tri-Nations
Test against the Springboks at Ellis Park in Johannesburg on Saturday.
The Kiwis arrived in South Africa on Sunday without their captain. He had
returned to his home in Wellington - after the All Blacks' 23-18 loss to the
Wallabies at the weekend - to be with his wife for the birth of their third
child.
And after Mrs Umaga gave birth on Sunday, to Lily-Kate Umaga, the way was
cleared for Umaga to travel to South Africa on Monday and join the team at
their base in Cape Town.
The All Blacks have decided to base themselves in Cape Town,쨠in an attempt
to counteract the effects of playing Saturday's Test at high altitude in
Johannesburg.
Umaga's initial absence is not the only concern for the Kiwis ahead of their
showdown with arch rivals South Africa.
Aaron Mauger and Rico Gear have been called into the All Blacks squad as
cover for injured players.
Sam Tuitupou suffered a broken rib in Saturday's loss to Australia, while
Doug Howlett suffered nerve damage in the right shoulder area.
Mauger has joined the All Blacks in Sydney for the flight to South Africa,
while Gear will fly out from New Zealand to join up with the squad in South
Africa.
