Marshall warns of burnout
All Black scrum-half Justin Marshall fears the expanded Tri-Nations and
Super 12 competitions will lead to player burnout.
From 2006 two more sides will be brought in to create a Super 14 event
and two extra Tests will be played by each team in the Tri-Nations.
"The top players need more balance," Marshall said.
"I've played Australia and South Africa 17 or 18 times and now we'll have
to play them three times every season."
Marshall added: "It can be physically and mentally draining."
A veteran of 77 internationals, Marshall said he was enjoying being back
playing in the more relaxed atmosphere of New Zealand's National Provincial
Championship (NPC) for Canterbury.
"The NPC is refreshing and relaxing and it's a great environment." he said.
"I love playing for the All Blacks, but it's not as relaxing as this.
"It's pretty tough going and it's now going to get tougher."
The All Blacks face a daunting schedule next year with the British Lions
touring an expanded Tri-Nations championship and another end-of-year tour.
