7. Matt Cain- RHP SF (10/1/84) Cain didn't make this list last year
because an injury caused him to miss half the 2003 season. He
rebounded in 2004 and outperformed all but the most optimistic
expectations. He already possesses a Major League fastball and curve.
Cain's numbers in the California League (a good hitter's league)
at the age of 19 just speak for themselves.
67. Merkin Valdez- RHP SF (11/5/81) Valdez has a big-time fastball?
routinely hitting 96 mph. He's a lot like Denny Bautista in that
he's kind of a tweener. I'm not sure his secondary pitches will
keep him in the rotation. 2004 was the first time he faced advanced
competition and he did tail off a bit as he moved up, so that is
a little reason for concern.
