Schmidt goes distance to top Cubs
Right-hander hurls second straight complete game
By Tony Kuttner / Special to MLB.com
SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants rode two home runs -- neither from Barry Bonds --
and a dominant pitching performance by Jason Schmidt to a 6-1 win Tuesday
night over the Chicago Cubs.
Schmidt (3-2), back on the mound after a tossing a five-hit shutout last week
in Milwaukee, turned in his second straight complete game.
He needed just 95 pitches to go the distance, as he gave up just five hits,
walked none and struck out five.
Rookie Rich Hill (0-2) took the loss for the Cubs, who have now dropped eight
straight and have scored just 11 runs in their last 10 games.
Already up 3-1 heading into the sixth, the Giants doubled their run total with
a homer to right by Randy Winn and a two-run blast to right by Lance Niekro.
The Cubs scored their lone run in the second on Michael Barrett's blast deep
into the left-field seats.
