Bonds hits No. 714 as Giants beat A's
Slugger ties Ruth's career homer mark in extra-inning win
By Rich Draper / MLB.com
OAKLAND -- Giants slugger Barry Bonds cracked his historic 714th career homer,
tying Babe Ruth's lifetime mark, and Ray Durham's single in the 10th drove
home the winning run in San Francisco's 4-2 victory over the Oakland A's on
Saturday at McAfee Coliseum.
Omar Vizquel led off the frame with a walk off losing pitcher Kiko Calero
(0-1), then Pedro Feliz singled and Bonds was walked to load the sacks,
setting up Durham's hit to right field.
Giants starter Jason Schmidt held a 2-1 lead in the ninth, but issued a
leadoff walk to Eric Chavez, who eventually tied the game on Jay Payton's RBI
single off reliever Armando Benitez.
Bonds reached the milestone with a blast to right center field off Athletics
starter Brad Halsey in the second inning. Giants catcher Mike Matheny also hit
a solo homer in the seventh inning, his third of the year.
