Grand slams played grand roles this past week for the Bank of America National
League co-Players of the Week.
Pirates left fielder Jason Bay and Giants third baseman Pedro Feliz each hit a
grand slam and added two more homers last week on their way to sharing the
weekly honor recognizing their play between May 15-21.
Bay led the league with 11 RBIs for the week, batted .333 and scored five
times. Feliz was just behind his co-Player of the Week with 10 RBIs and was
tied for the NL lead scoring eight times.
Bay said he knows he's an integral part of the Pirates' offense, and his
production last week proved it.
In helping his team win its second series of the season, he went 5-for-13 with
seven RBIs against the Reds. Then Saturday, against the Indians in
Interleague Play, he was three-of-five with two homers and four RBIs.
For the week, Bay had a .750 slugging percentage and a .407 on-base percentage.
"He's a guy that has been in the middle of a lot of the things we've done
offensively here as of late," Pirates manager Jim Tracy said. "He's starting
to heat up."
Since moving from the clean-up spot to sixth for a game May 12, Bay's
offensive production has exploded. In the eight games since the move, he has
10 hits and 11 RBIs.
"It's nice for me to get out of a funk and get rolling a little bit especially
if that translates to wins for us," he said.
The Giants went 5-1 this past week, including a series sweep at Houston in
which the team scored at least 10 runs in all three games. Feliz played a huge
role for his team's offense against the Astros.
In Houston, Feliz hit a homer in each game, and in the series opener May 15,
he totaled three hits and five RBIs. For the series, which include a start at
clean-up for a resting Barry Bonds, Feliz went 8-for-16 and scored six runs.
On the week, Feliz had a .679 slugging percentage and 19 total bases.
"He's staying on the breaking ball more and still hitting the fastball he
likes to hit," Giants manager Felipe Alou said. "He's a tremendous athlete.
He never gets tired. He's like [Baltimore all-star shortstop Miguel] Tejada,
same kind of body."
Feliz, who said he has been seeing pitches well of late, looks to keep up his
streak of playing in each game and has plans that go beyond the regular season.
"I'm in there every day and I hope I can keep it that way," he said. "I'd like
to play more than 162 games, with the playoffs."
