Catcher smacks key two-run homer for first Major League hit
By Rich Draper / MLB.com
NEW YORK -- Rookie catcher Eliezer Alfonzo clubbed a two-run homer for his
first Major League hit, while right-hander Matt Cain lasted only five innings
but won his third straight game in San Francisco's 6-4 victory over the New
York Mets in the first game of a doubleheader at Shea Stadium on Saturday.
Alfonzo, a 10-year Minor Leaguer replacing injured starter Mike Matheny, hit a
365-foot shot with Pedro Feliz aboard for the Giants' game-winning blow in
the sixth inning.
Cain (4-5) struck out six batters and allowed only three earned runs, while
Steve Finley also contributed a single, double and two RBIs. Barry Bonds went
2-for-3 with two singles, an RBI, a run scored, a strikeout and two walks.
The losing pitcher was Orlando Hernandez (3-5), who issued eight hits and five
runs over six innings.
