07/15/2006 9:20 PM ET Lowry, Giants overpowered by Phils Left-hander, bullpen unable to corral Philadelphia's hitters By Rich Draper / MLB.com Noah Lowry was unable to get out of the fourth, and San Francisco couldn't recover. (Marcio Jose Sanchez/AP) SAN FRANCISCO -- There was a nice, clean inning by Giants starter Noah Lowry on Saturday -- almost germ-free -- and it appeared this would be a good day for the left-hander. "Noah had a beautiful first inning," said manager Felipe Alou, "as good an inning as you'd like to see him or any pitcher go ahead, 1, 2, 3, with a strikeout." Sweet as can be. Yet things got a bit -- no, a lot -- messier after that, as Lowry would frustratingly watch as his pitching mechanics got out of sync, like a misfiring piston, and for him and the usually reliable San Francisco relief corps, it went downhill in a 14-6 loss to the Phillies at AT&T Park. "It was a losing game, bad game," said Alou. "I don't think we have time to discuss the whole thing." He's right. It would take hours to discuss every nuance of everything that went wrong this day despite the rare good moments, such as Moises Alou clubbing a two-run homer in the first inning, Pedro Feliz recording his eighth three-hit game of the year -- he rules the Giants' RBI roost with 63 -- and even Barry Bonds shockingly stealing his second and third bases in two games. Still, the Phillies would rip apart Giants pitching for 18 hits, including two homers and seven other extra-base hits, with Lowry allowing six runs over only 3 2/3 innings, reliever Brad Hennessey giving up four hits and three runs in two frames, Kevin Correia rocked for four runs and six hits over two innings -- you get the picture. Lowry had been on a two-game winning streak and seemed to have his mechanical act together, but it did a quick fade after that glorious first inning. "Mechanically right now, I'm not where I should be," said Lowry. "That's what it came down to. I've got things I have to work on for my next start. Today it was bad. I didn't do a good job and I let the team down and let myself down." Of course, the Phillies had a thing or two to say and do about it. Like Pat Burrell leading off the second inning with his 20th homer of the year and going 4-for-4 with four RBIs, including a three-run double. Like Ryan Howard bashing a monster two-run shot onto the bricks in deep right-center. Like Chase Utley upping his career-best hitting streak to 17 games. Some of that was out of the Giants' control, but Lowry knows his first priority now is to fix what ails him. "It's something I'll try to put behind me and move on to the next one," said Lowry, who added that his delivery mechanics have been hit and miss all season . "I'm a guy that has to have feel -- I'm not going to overpower guys. Everybody knows that. I have to have my mechanics fundamentally sound so I can make pitches. Today, I didn't do a good job of it and I paid for it." Among the day's frustrations was Todd Greene struggling defensively, especially on his inability to catch a Burrell pop foul that landed on the warning track near the camera well to the right of home plate. It was doable, but blinded by the sun, the catcher couldn't make the play. Second later, Burrell blasted his bases-clearing double, boosting Philadelphia to a 6-3 lead, one they would never relinquish. "That would have been the third out," said the skipper. How well Greene knew that, but he said he can't wear dark glasses while catching, and looking up to find that ball, he saw only glare. "I look out a lot more than I look up," he said. "You can see, can't catch it. I picked it up too late. A lot of guys wear [dark glasses], but I can't do it ." Even this veteran catcher couldn't get Lowry out of his funk, either, despite some serious trying. "We tried everything," Greene said. "You can't do the same thing over and over again and make mistakes with it or not be able to throw strikes. We tried everything that we had today." So did the relievers, but nothing seemed to work for them, either. Hennessey has been super all season and had forged a 1.85 ERA with a .157 average against over his first 11 career relief appearances. Hennessey entered the fourth with the bases loaded and guess-who up -- Burrell. Four pitches, including that infamous pop foul later, Burrell sent all the runners home. "I made a pretty good pitch [to Burrell]," said Hennessey, "and he just did a good job of digging it out and bringing everybody in. We couldn't stop the onslaught -- we just have to limit the damage and keep the score somewhat close. "Usually one of us [relievers] does the job, but we all kind of put ourselves in a funk," said Hennessey. Rich Draper is a reporter for MLB.com.
