Morris stars in Giants' first victory
Right-hander goes six strong innings; Durham drives in two
By Chris Haft / MLB.com
SAN FRANCISCO -- The San Francisco Giants parlayed Matt Morris' stingy
pitching and a four-run fifth inning into their first victory of the season, a
5-3 decision Thursday night over the San Diego Padres.
One night after hitting his 735th career home run, Barry Bonds barely missed
his 736th when he doubled to the base of the right-center-field wall in the
first inning. Still, Bonds drove in Dave Roberts, who was aboard via a leadoff
single.
San Diego briefly tied the score in the fifth on Khalil Greene's leadoff
double and pitcher Clay Hensley's two-out single.
Hensley's wildness and a little luck helped the Giants surge ahead for good in
their half of the inning. With two outs, Hensley prolonged matters by walking
Roberts, Omar Vizquel and Bonds to load the bases. Ray Durham singled to
right field on a full-count pitch, scoring Roberts and Vizquel.
Rich Aurilia lifted a popup to shallow left field, where Padres third baseman
Kevin Kouzmanoff and Greene, the shortstop, converged on the ball. Kouzmanoff
backed into Greene and knocked him over, enabling the ball to fall untouched
for an RBI single. Ryan Klesko followed with a clean single up the middle to
drive in the inning's final run.
Morris improved to 7-3 lifetime against San Diego by lasting six innings.
After surrendering only one hit through four innings, Morris stranded two
Padres on base in each of his final two innings.
