Zito victorious as Giants roll
Durham's three-run homer highlights offensive onslaught
By Tony DeMarco / Special to MLB.com
DENVER -- Successfully dodging rain drops for the first time since Friday, the
Giants found the rest of their night to be a walk in the park.
They exploded for five runs in the third inning, and that was more than enough
for new ace Barry Zito, who cruised to an 8-0 victory over the Colorado
Rockies before an announced crowd of 18,222 at Coors Field.
After getting rained out on successive days in Pittsburgh, the Giants faced a
Monday night forecast for more of the wet stuff, but it never materialized.
Then they rained runs on Rockies starter Jeff Francis and two relievers.
Ray Durham's three-run homer in the third inning was the decisive blow, and it
was followed by a solo shot from Bengie Molina. Omar Vizquel had four hits
and drove in two runs, and the Giants banged out 13 hits -- seven for extra
bases -- and matched their season-high run total.
Zito, the club's $126 million free-agent signee, earned his first victory with
an outstanding six-inning performance, allowing only three hits and three
walks while striking out four.
Zito retired 11 in a row to start the game before walking Garrett Atkins with
two out in the fourth, and escaped his only jam by striking out Jamey Carroll
with the bases loaded to end the fifth.
