Zito, Giants drop Opening Day game
Lefty surrenders four runs in five innings; offense lackluster
By Chris Haft / MLB.com
LOS ANGELES -- Barry Zito's Opening Day futility continued Monday while Brad
Penny mystified the Giants' hitters as the Los Angeles Dodgers claimed a 5-0
decision.
While both teams celebrated the beginning of their 50th anniversary seasons
on the West Coast, only the Dodgers rose to the occasion.
Zito (0-1) allowed four runs and eight hits in five innings as he fell to 0-4
with an 8.83 ERA in season-opening assignments. Three of those runs came in
the first inning as Rafael Furcal hit a ground-rule double, Matt Kemp lined
an RBI single and Jeff Kent homered, his 21st round-tripper in only 341
at-bats against his former team.
Los Angeles scored again in the second inning. Blake DeWitt singled in his
first Major League at-baat, advanced on Penny's sacrifice bunt and scored on
Furcal's single.
The Dodgers concluded their scoring against reliever Merkin Valdez in the
sixth. James Loney singled, moved to second on a wild pitch, took third on a
passed ball and scored as second baseman Ray Durham muffed Penny's bloop at
the edge of the infield dirt. The play was scored a fielder's choice as
Durham threw to second to force out DeWitt, who had walked.
The Giants mustered four hits in 6 2/3 innings off Penny (1-0), who retired
13 consecutive batters from the third through seventh innings. He surrendered
seventh-inning singles to Bengie Molina and Aaron Rowand, but right-hander
Scott Proctor coaxed Jose Castillo's inning-ending popup.
