Giants can't stop Dodgers in ninth
Cain tosses zeros into sixth; Bocock, Velez collect RBIs

LOS ANGELES -- Pinch-hitter Delwyn Young's two-out, ninth-inning single off
reliever Keiichi Yabu broke a tie Tuesday night and gave the Los Angeles
Dodgers their second victory in a row over the Giants, 3-2.
Rafael Furcal's one-out single to right field opened Los Angeles'
ninth-inning rally. Russell Martin walked on a 3-2 pitch, advancing Furcal.
After Yabu struck out Andre Ethier, Young hit a grounder to the right side
that second baseman Ray Durham smothered. Durham couldn't come up with the
ball cleanly and threw too late to first base to get Young. The speedy
Furcal, who never broke stride around third base, slid home ahead of first
baseman Rich Aurilia's throw.
Giants starter Matt Cain's luckless streak lengthened, but at least he didn't
absorb the decision. Cain, who received poor run support while finishing 7-16
with a 3.65 ERA last year, lasted 5 2/3 innings and allowed three hits.
Having thrown 113 pitches, Cain disappeared after issuing consecutive two-out
walks to Andruw Jones and James Loney to load the bases. Jack Taschner
relieved Cain and ended the uprising by striking out pinch-hitter Matt Kemp.
After being blanked 5-0 on Opening Day, the Giants finally broke through with
a pair of seventh-inning runs. Consecutive singles by Durham, Aaron Rowand
and Jose Castillo loaded the bases with nobody out. Castillo's hit was a
sharp grounder off pitcher Derek Lowe's left calf that knocked him out of the
game.
Brian Bocock, who singled for his first Major League hit in the second
inning, coaxed a walk from reliever Joe Beimel on a 3-2 pitch that forced
home Durham. One out later, pinch-hitter Eugenio Velez's bloop single scored
Rowand.
Los Angeles pulled even in its half of the seventh. Reliever Brad Hennessey
yielded back-to-back singles by Blake DeWitt and pinch-hitter Mark Sweeney
before the Dodgers executed a double-steal. Furcal singled to center field,
tying the score.
