Giants make most of opportunity
Team capitalizes on Drew error to take D-backs opener
By Chris Haft / MLB.com
SAN FRANCISCO -- Capitalizing on shortstop Stephen Drew's error, the Giants
scored twice in Monday night's seventh inning and prevailed, 5-4, over the
Arizona Diamondbacks.
With the Giants trailing, 4-3, pinch-hitter Eugenio Velez opened San
Francisco's seventh by grounding an infield single up the middle off Chad
Qualls (0-1). Randy Winn then hit a one-hop smash directly at Drew that went
through his legs and trickled into short left-center field as Velez sped to
third base. Aaron Rowand's walk loaded the bases before Ray Durham's
fielder's-choice grounder delivered one run and Bengie Molina's sacrifice fly
scored another.
The Giants mustered little offense against D-Backs left-hander Randy Johnson,
who was making his first start of the season after recovering from back
surgery last August. Johnson allowed three unearned runs in the second
inning, and none of the three hits he surrendered was struck particularly
hard.
For the ninth time in 13 games, the D-Backs scored in the first inning,
notching a pair of runs off Giants starter Jonathan Sanchez. Conor Jackson
followed Orlando Hudson's two-out single with his first homer of the season,
a drive to left field on a 2-1 pitch.
Arizona's shoddy defense helped the Giants jump ahead in the second. The
inning began with third baseman Mark Reynolds mishandling Jose Castillo's
grounder for an error. Daniel Ortmeier walked before Sanchez sacrificed the
runners ahead one out later. Winn hit a bloop to short left field that Drew
grabbed but couldn't hold, resulting in a two-run single. Rowand doubled home
Winn on a grounder that Reynolds failed to backhand.
The D-Backs reclaimed the lead with two more runs in the third. With one out,
Hudson doubled and scored on Jackson's single to right-center field. Jackson
took second on Rowand's accompanying fielding error and came home on Justin
Upton's two-out single.
