N.L. West spring training capsules
Los Angeles Dodgers
Manager: Joe Torre (second season)
2008: 84-78, first place
He's here: SP Randy Wolf, IF Mark Loretta, RP Guillermo Mota, C Brad Ausmus,
SP Claudio Vargas, IF Juan Castro, SP Jeff Weaver, SP Shawn Estes,
SP Eric Milton.
He's outta here: OF Manny Ramirez*, SP Derek Lowe, 2B Jeff Kent,
RP Takashi Saito, SP Greg Maddux, SP Brad Penny,
RP Joe Beimel*, IF Nomar Garciaparra*, OF Andruw Jones,
SP/RP Chan Ho Park, 1B Mark Sweeney*, SS Angel Berroa,
RP Scott Proctor, C Gary Bennett*, SP Jason Johnson.
Outlook: The stalemate between the Dodgers and Ramirez continues, with Ramirez
having rejected three offers from the club. If he doesn't re-sign with Los
Angeles, the team will have a tough time replacing him (with OFs Bobby Abreu
and Adam Dunn off the market). Without Ramirez, the Dodgers could field a
starting outfield of Matt Kemp, Andre Ethier and Juan Pierre. The team will
have a healthy Rafael Furcal at shortstop, and it also re-signed deadline
pickup 3B Casey Blake. Randy Wolf joins the rotation, while free agent RP
Dennys Reyes could help a depleted bullpen. With Saito gone, Jonathan Broxton
moves into the closer role.
Arizona Diamondbacks
Manager: Bob Melvin (fifth season)
2008: 82-80, second place
He's here: SP Jon Garland, 2B Felipe Lopez, RP Scott Schoeneweis,
RP Tom Gordon.
He's outta here: 1B/OF Adam Dunn, 2B Orlando Hudson*, SP Randy Johnson,
RP Juan Cruz*, RP Brandon Lyon, 2B David Eckstein,
IF/OF Chris Burke, RP Connor Robertson, C Robby Hammock,
OF Jeff Salazar.
Outlook: The D-backs lost Johnson to free agency and replaced him with Garland,
who has pitched at least 191 innings and made at least 32 starts each of the
past seven seasons. The rotation also should include young Max Scherzer. The
infield defense takes a hit with the departure of Hudson, a three-time Gold
Glove winner. An inconsistent bullpen was a big reason the Diamondbacks failed
to defend their N.L. West title in 2008, and it doesn't appear to be much
better with Chad Qualls in the closer role. The outfield is crowded, with Conor
Jackson, Justin Upton, Chris Young and Eric Byrnes contending for playing time.
Colorado Rockies
Manager: Clint Hurdle (eighth season)
2008: 74-88, third place
He's here: SP Jason Marquis, SP Greg Smith, RP Huston Street,
OF Carlos Gonzalez, RP Alan Embree, RP Randy Flores,
C Sal Fasano, OF Matt Murton, SP Josh Fogg.
He's outta here: OF Matt Holliday, RP Brian Fuentes, OF Willy Taveras,
RP Luis Vizcaino, RP Matt Herges, 2B Jayson Nix,
OF Cory Sullivan, SP Livan Hernandez*, C Adam Melhuse.
Outlook: There was no Rocktober in 2008 as the Rockies failed to find their
footing, plummeting back to their customary sub-.500 selves. Colorado finished
10 games behind the Dodgers in a mediocre N.L. West. The Rockies traded
All-Star slugger Holliday to Oakland in the offseason, lost closer Fuentes to
free agency and fired several assistant coaches. They added former Colorado
skipper Don Baylor as hitting coach, brought in Marquis to bolster the rotation
and signed hard-throwing SP Ubaldo Jimenez to a long-term deal.
San Francisco Giants
Manager: Bruce Bochy (third season)
2008: 72-90, fourth place
He's here: SP Randy Johnson, SS Edgar Renteria, RP Jeremy Affeldt,
RP Bob Howry, IF Juan Uribe, RP Justin Miller, SP/RP Ramon Ortiz.
He's outta here: SS Omar Vizquel, SP Kevin Correia, RP Tyler Walker,
SP Brad Hennessey, RP Vinnie Chulk.
Outlook: The Giants hope for progress after a dismal first year following OF
Barry Bonds' departure. G.M. Brian Sabean is banking that a tough starting
rotation will come together around Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum, the
talented Matt Cain and the 45-year-old Johnson, who needs five wins to reach
300. Renteria is expected to replace Vizquel as the infield's anchor while
providing better offensive stats. The lineup lacks proven pop, with only C
Bengie Molina and OF Aaron Rowand providing even moderate power. That's why
Giants fans still have dreams about signing free agent OF Manny Ramirez.
San Diego Padres
Manager: Bud Black (third season)
2008: 63-99, fifth place
He's here: OF Cliff Floyd, 2B David Eckstein, SP Kevin Correia,
RP Mark Worrell, C Henry Blanco, IF/OF Chris Burke, RP Jae Kuk Ryu.
He's outta here: RP Trevor Hoffman, SS Khalil Greene, C Michael Barrett,
C Josh Bard, RP Clay Hensley, SP Shawn Estes, RP Kevin Cameron,
SP/RP Justin Germano.
Outlook: With Jeff Moorad leading a new ownership group that is expected to be
in place by opening day, the Padres will attempt to bounce back from an ugly
season. Their offseason payroll slashing nearly cost them ace Jake Peavy and
led to them pulling their offer to Hoffman. The Padres will spend spring
training filling the two spots in the rotation behind Peavy, Chris Young and
Cha Seung Baek. After playing shortstop the bulk of his career, Eckstein shifts
to second. Third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff returning from shoulder surgery.
