[新聞] Steve Johnson selected by San Francisco Giants in Rule V
When minor league pitching prospect Steve Johnson was traded to Baltimore as
a part of the George Sherrill deal last summer, his father, former Orioles
pitcher and current MASN and FM 105.7 employee Dave Johnson, cried on the
air.
He may be crying off the air now.
On Thursday morning, the San Francisco Giants plucked Steve Johnson from the
Orioles system in the Rule V draft. Johnson was left unprotected when the
Orioles left him off the 40 man roster.
Johnson was 3-2 at AA Bowie with a 2.84 ERA. In 145 total innings in '09,
Johnson had 154 strikeouts. Johnson was coveted by the Orioles but not
considered a top tier prospect in a system that is now loaded with pitching
prospects.
The Giants will have to carry Johnson on their roster or season or offer him
back.
The Orioles took a calculated risk in this situation and it does not seem to
have worked in their favor. A quick glance at the Orioles 40 man roster
reveals several minor league pitchers who were protected, including Luis
Lebron, Chorye Spoone and Armando Garbino. O's scouts must rate these
players higher than Johnson. Time will tell if they are correct.
Also, shortstop Pedro Florimon Jr was protected in the draft. He is
currently no better than 3rd on the team's depth chart at short.
