Bochy nearing All-Star decision time

PHOENIX -- In just under a month's time, Giants manager Bruce Bochy will be
inside the home dugout at Chase Field, managing the National League in the
82nd MLB All-Star Game.
On Thursday, Bochy was inside the visitors' dugout, talking about the
prospects of D-backs and Giants players to make the All-Star team.
"We'll do our homework," Bochy said. "I talked to [D-backs manager Kirk]
Gibson before this series, and we'll touch base later.
"At times it's difficult, because you have to take somebody from a club or
you have a need somewhere. It's going to be the case like it is every year,
there's going to be a couple guys that should be on the team that probably
won't be on it."
Bochy named Gibson to his staff earlier in the season and said the honor of
being an All-Star will go to those most deserving, regardless of team.
"How I look at it is I try to be as fair as I can," Bochy said. "If I think
somebody deserves to be on the club and they're having a better year than
somebody at the home park, I wouldn't take away from the guy who I think
should be on the team."
When asked if third baseman Pablo Sandoval, who missed six weeks with an
injury, still had time to make the roster, Bochy smiled and said yes.
Bumgarner, Pablo weigh in on Chase Field
PHOENIX -- Giants starting pitcher Madison Bumgarner and third baseman Pablo
Sandoval share the same thoughts about Phoenix.
"I like Arizona," Bumgarner said. "It's a nice place to come visit."
But in the next breath, the 21-year-old left-hander summed up what it's like
to pitch at Chase Field.
"It's obviously a hitter's ballpark," he said. "But I still don't mind
pitching here."
Wednesday night, Bumgarner gave up solo home runs to Willie Bloomquist and
Chris Young, his third and fourth home runs allowed this season.
And three of those four have come at Chase Field.
"It all evens out, though," he said. "Our ballpark, being a pitcher's park,
they might hit some balls there that would be a home run most anywhere else."
But Sandoval isn't complaining.
"Sometimes when you come off the disabled list you want to come back at a
place you feel comfortable," he said.
And Chase Field is somewhere Sandoval is very comfortable, hitting .361 with
four home runs and 19 RBIs in 25 games.
"One of the things I like here is the batter's eye," he said. "I think it
helps the hitter more, but it's just one of those things."
He has a hit and run scored in each of the first two games of the series.
Worth noting
‧ Giants second baseman Freddy Sanchez had a second opinion on his injured
shoulder, manager Bruce Bochy said on Thursday.
"It went fine," Bochy said. "Right now, he's playing his rehab to see how it
goes. We'll evaluate him once we gets into the rehab a little bit and see
what kind of progress he's making."
Sanchez was hurt in last Friday's game against Cincinnati and was placed on
the disabled list earlier this week.
‧ Closer Brian Wilson leads the Major Leagues with 20 saves and is riding
the fourth-longest scoreless-innings streak in the National League at 14 1/3.
‧ Outfielder Darren Ford will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Fresno
on Thursday and is scheduled to play five innings in the field.
