Giants follow Lincecum-Posey script to victory
Staff ace fans 13 for first win; San Fran hits for cycle in first inning

SAN DIEGO -- Though it's far too early to take win-loss records seriously,
the Giants commanded attention with their 8-4 victory Wednesday over the
Padres.
This is what happens when Tim Lincecum is at his dominant best and multiple
hitters simultaneously emerge from a funk.
Lincecum (1-1) allowed a mere three hits and struck out 13 in seven sparkling
innings. The right-hander established himself immediately by striking out the
first four hitters he faced and six of the first seven en route to his 27th
career double-digit strikeout game. That tied Jason Schmidt for second-most
by a Giants pitcher since 1900 -- only one behind franchise leader Christy
Mathewson.
Lincecum, whose lone lapse was Nick Hundley's third-inning home run, improved
his career ERA against San Diego to 2.03 in 14 outings.
The Giants backed Lincecum with a breadth of offense that was missing through
much of their 2-4 trip -- which actually represented an improvement over
previous April swings through Los Angeles and San Diego (0-6 in 2009, 1-5
last year).
Aubrey Huff, who entered the game batting .211, rapped three hits and drove
in two runs. Buster Posey, who had no extra-base hits and one RBI as
Wednesday dawned, homered among his three hits and added four RBIs. Pablo
Sandoval went 3-for-5 with an RBI and rookie Brandon Belt singled twice to
end an 0-for-13 skid.
The Giants jumped ahead with one out in the first inning as Freddy Sanchez
tripled, Huff doubled and Posey reached the left-field seats. With Sandoval's
subsequent single, the Giants hit for the cycle in a span of four batters.
Hundley's homer narrowed the difference to 3-1, but the Giants offset that
run in the fifth as Andres Torres walked and scored on another Huff double.
The Giants pulled away in the sixth, which began with Belt's second single of
the day. Miguel Tejada walked and Lincecum sacrificed, prompting the Padres
to replace right-hander Pat Neshek with left-hander Cory Luebke. The move
initally looked shrewd, as Luebke fanned Torres. Padres manager Bud Black
ordered an intentional walk to Sanchez to load the bases and set up a
lefty-against-lefty matchup with Huff, who hit a dribbler between the mound
and third base for an infield single that scored Belt.
Posey followed with a two-run single and Sandoval contributed an RBI poke to
cap the scoring for the Giants.
Closer Brian Wilson, activated from the disabled list before the game, came
on to pitch the ninth. He yielded two hits and a walk and was relieved after
striking out Ryan Ludwick on his 23rd pitch. Jeremy Affeldt and Ramon Ramirez
came on to finish the game, though the Padres ended up with three runs in the
inning.
