Cain hits rough patch in loss to Rockies

DENVER -- Right-hander Matt Cain endured a rare subpar outing on Wednesday as
the Giants finished their two-city trip with a 10-2 loss to the Colorado
Rockies.
Cain (2-1) had recorded quality starts in each of his previous three
appearances. But his ERA rose from 1.42 to 3.42 as he yielded six runs --
twice as many as he had surrendered all season -- in 4 2/3 innings. Ty
Wigginton drove in four runs to pace the Rockies (13-5), who lead the Giants
(10-8) by three games in the National League West.
Rockies starter Jorge De La Rosa (3-0) encountered no such problems,
permitting two runs and four hits in seven innings as he improved to 7-1
lifetime against San Francisco.
The Giants still experienced a successful trip, finishing 4-2, while winning
series against Arizona and Colorado.
The Giants briefly jumped ahead again by scoring in the first inning, as
Aaron Rowand doubled and came home on Buster Posey's two-out single. San
Francisco owned the first inning in this series, outscoring Colorado, 10-0,
in that frame. The Giants' 21 runs in the first is their most in any inning
this year.
Colorado assumed control against Cain in the second inning. The Rockies tied
the score as Troy Tulowitzki doubled, Todd Helton was hit by a pitch and Seth
Smith hit an RBI single. Wigginton reached the left-field seats with his
first home run of the season, which also happened to be the 1,000th hit of
his career.
The Rockies widened the difference to 6-1 in the fifth. Wigginton drove in a
run with a groundout and Jose Morales lined an RBI double.
Posey followed Freddy Sanchez's leadoff single in the sixth inning with a
run-scoring groundout.
The Rockies responded with four runs in the seventh. Dan Runzler's wild
pickoff throw led directly to another RBI single by Smith. Ryan Spilborghs'
pinch-hit, three-run homer off Guillermo Mota in the seventh inning concluded
the scoring.
