Walks the story in Giants' win over Nationals
By Chris Haft / MLB.com | 4/30/2011 6:57 PM ET
WASHINGTON -- Aubrey Huff left the bench to coax a bases-loaded walk that
snapped a seventh-inning deadlock and lifted the Giants to a 2-1 victory
Saturday over the Washington Nationals.
The Giants survived the sloppiness of starter Jonathan Sanchez, who somehow
allowed just one unearned run in five innings. Sanchez issued five walks and
hit two batters among the first 11 Nationals he faced, yet surrendered just
one run when Rick Ankiel, the last batter he confronted in that stretch,
blooped a single off shortstop Mike Fontenot's glove. After Ankiel's hit,
Sanchez retired the next eight batters he faced and 11 of his final 13.
Overall, Sanchez yielded two hits, walked six and struck out seven.
With one out and the score tied, 1-1, in the seventh, Miguel Tejada launched
San Francisco's go-ahead rally against Nats starter John Lannan (2-2) with an
infield single. One out later, Fontenot hit a drive to right-center field
that easily would have scored Tejada, but the ball bounded over the wall for
a ground-rule double.
Eli Whiteside, whose third-inning homer evened the score, drew an intentional
walk. That loaded the bases, set up a force play at every base and prompted
the Giants to use a pinch-hitter. Manager Bruce Bochy's choice was the
slumping Huff, who entered the game batting .202 and had just three hits in
his previous 31 at-bats. Huff worked the count full before drawing a walk
that pushed Tejada across.
