Crawford made a great first impression, as he hit a grand slam off Shaun Marcum in the seventh inning. Crawford broke a finger during Spring Training and was assigned to Class A San Jose on May 11. After just 14 games at San Jose, where he batted .322 with three home runs and 15 RBIs, he was called up to the Giants this week. "It's been an interesting couple of last months," Crawford said. "Right before I got hurt was probably the best I ever hit. Everything was clicking. It made it a little bit worse." Manager Bruce Bochy said Crawford could also play third base for the Giants. Bochy ejected after arguing call at home MILWAUKEE -- Giants manager Bruce Bochy was ejected by home-plate umpire Mike Muchlinski in the fifth inning Friday night for arguing a call at home plate. Milwaukee's Nyjer Morgan was ruled safe on a close play, with replays showing he touched the plate just ahead of the tag from catcher Eli Whiteside. Bochy came out and vehemently argued with Muchlinski, getting ejected for the first time this season. Morgan was on third when Rickie Weeks hit a grounder to Giants starter Tim Lincecum. Lincecum threw sharply home to Whiteside, who was standing in front of the plate and not blocking it. Unlike the Marlins' Scott Cousins, who barreled into Buster Posey on Wednesday night, Morgan simply slid into the plate and was ruled safe to give Milwaukee a 3-0 lead. Bochy plans to mostly use Belt off bench MILWAUKEE -- Brandon Belt was the Giants' Opening Day first baseman, but struggled and was sent back to the Minor Leagues. Now, he's returned, but his role will be different, manager Bruce Bochy said Friday. "I'm going to use him off the bench, [and with] double switches," Bochy said. "He'll get some starts in the outfield or at first base. We're in a pretty good stretch here of consecutive games. I'll try to get him in there wherever I can." Belt played mostly in the outfield for Triple-A Fresno, where he hit .337 in 31 games. "It gives us an option," Bochy said. The Giants manager acknowledged it would be nice for Belt to get plenty of playing time in the Minors rather than play occasionally in the big leagues. But the team's injuries gave them little choice but to recall him from Fresno. "We needed Brandon," he said. "When you've got the number of injuries we've had, the inventory gets a lot smaller, too. Sometimes you're not allowed to leave him there to get his three or four at-bats a day." Giants sticking with Whiteside at catcher MILWAUKEE -- Giants general manager Brian Sabean said Friday that he's received inquiries from other teams asking whether he would like to trade for a catcher, but he prefers to use Eli Whiteside as the starter for now. Manager Bruce Bochy said Whiteside likely would start about five games to backup Chris Stewart's two in the absence of Buster Posey, who suffered a broken left leg and torn ligaments in his left ankle in a collision with Florida's Scott Cousins this week. Without divulging details of which teams contacted him, Sabean said he received calls and texts from some teams asking whether they wanted to trade for a catcher. "We thank our lucky stars that Whitey's in this position," Sabean said of Whiteside. "He deserves a shot to see what it looks like. He's more than capable. He's been around the block. He's a good guy to turn to. We're very fortunate." Whiteside was batting .185 (5-for-27) in 15 games, entering Friday. Worth noting Switch-hitter Pablo Sandoval took swings from both sides of the plate for the second consecutive day with a coach tossing him the ball underhand. Sandoval is on the disabled list recovering from a broken bone in his right hand, and is expected to return to the lineup in mid-June. ... The Giants had Buster Posey's No. 28 jersey hanging in a locker between the lockers of Tim Lincecum and Sergio Romo. Joe DiGiovanni is a contributor to MLB.com.
