Sanchez reaches 1,000-hit milestone
By Joe DiGiovanni / Special to MLB.com | 05/29/11 2:52 PM ET
MILWAUKEE -- Freddy Sanchez singled up the middle in the first inning Sunday
for his 1,000th career hit.
Sanchez hit the second pitch from Milwaukee starter Yovani Gallardo into
center field for a single, in his 893rd Major League game over 10 seasons.
For the season, Sanchez came into Sunday's game batting .298 with two home
runs and 17 RBIs.
Besides the Giants, he has played for Boston and Pittsburgh. The Giants
acquired him in a trade with Pittsburgh for right-hander Tim Alderson on July
29, 2009.
In his career, Sanchez is batting .298 with 47 homers and 364 RBIs.
Sandoval getting close to rehab games
MILWAUKEE -- Pablo Sandoval may be ready to go on a rehab assignment by the
end of the week and could return to the Giants near the end of their 10-game
homestand in mid-June, manager Bruce Bochy said Sunday.
Sandoval, who had surgery to remove a fractured hamate bone in his right
hand, will begin taking batting practice when the team plays at St. Louis
this week, Bochy said before the Giants' series finale against the Milwaukee
Brewers.
"We'll see how his progression goes," Bochy said, adding he thought Sandoval
would need between 20 and 25 plate appearances in the Minors before being
ready to rejoin the Giants.
"At least 20, but again, we'll see how he's going," he said. "We may think
he's ready before that."
The Giants have struggled to score runs and now are missing both Sandoval and
Buster Posey, out with a broken left leg and torn ligaments in his left ankle.
"It will be nice to have Pablo back," he said. "We're missing two guys who
hit in the heart of our order. That's not easy to replace."
Sandoval lost about 40 pounds during the winter and arrived at Spring
Training in good shape. Bochy said he has kept the weight off since being out
since April 29.
"He may be just a little heavier than what he was at the end of Spring
Training, but he's done a good job of staying in shape," Bochy said.
Sandoval is batting .313 with five home runs and 14 RBIs in 24 games.
Belt gets first start in left, Burriss at third
MILWAUKEE -- Brandon Belt made his first Major League start in left field
Sunday after playing only first base in his first stint with the team this
year.
Meanwhile, Emmanuel Burriss started at third base for the first time in his
career and catcher Chris Stewart made his first Major League start in more
than three years in Sunday's game against the Milwaukee Brewers.
Belt was the Opening Day starter at first, but batted only .192 in 17 games
and was sent to Triple-A Fresno. In the Minors, the left-handed-hitting Belt
played a lot of outfield, so manager Bruce Bochy started him in left against
right-hander Yovani Gallardo, with fellow lefty hitter Aubrey Huff at first.
"We decided to put him in left and keep Huff in there," Bochy said. "Go with
some left-handed bats. See if we can ignite the offense a little bit."
Bochy said Burriss has been taking ground balls at third in practice and was
given the starting nod in place of Miguel Tejada. Rookie Brandon Crawford
started at shortstop.
"I think it's fair to say Miggy's struggling, so we are giving him the day
game off," Bochy said.
Stewart was making his first start since April 29, 2008, when he played for
the New York Yankees against the Detroit Tigers. Bochy said he was giving
Stewart a start because he didn't want to overuse new starter Eli Whiteside,
who had not played much until Buster Posey was injured Wednesday.
"I want to make sure we break him in in an easy way because he hasn't been
catching very often," Bochy said.
