Posey leads catchers in votes; Panda in running
By Chris Haft / MLB.com | 05/31/11 3:00 PM ET
The first round of All-Star voting results announced Tuesday might arouse
some bittersweet feelings among the Giants and their fans.
Buster Posey leads National League catchers with 785,314 votes, more than
150,000 ahead of second-place Brian McCann of Atlanta. The vast majority of
those votes, of course, were turned in before May 25, when Posey sustained a
broken left leg and torn ankle ligaments that will sideline him for the rest
of the season.
Another inactive Giant who's thriving at the ballot box is third baseman
Pablo Sandoval, who ranks third at his position with 522,037 votes. Sandoval,
who trails first-place Placido Polanco of Philadelphia by about 200,000 votes
and second-place Chipper Jones of Atlanta by approximately 18,000 votes,
hasn't played since April 29 as he recovers from surgery to remove a
fractured hamate bone from his right hand.
Yet if Sandoval returns in two weeks, as the Giants hope, he'll have time to
make a legitimate push for inclusion on the NL squad. Sandoval was leading
the Giants in batting average (.313), on-base percentage (.374) and slugging
percentage (.530) when he was hurt.
Freddy Sanchez ranks fifth among second basemen with 347,713 votes, about
490,000 votes behind the leader, Cincinnati's Brandon Phillips. Sanchez
entered Tuesday as the hottest-hitting Giant, batting .386 (22-for-57) while
hitting safely in 12 of his previous 14 games.
