Sanchez fights control as Giants' bats stifled

SAN FRANCISCO -- There weren't many things to discuss in the Giants'
clubhouse Tuesday night.
"We weren't able to do it tonight," second baseman Freddy Sanchez said after
San Francisco dropped a 2-1 decision to Jordan Zimmermann and the Washington
Nationals. "We're not going to be able to come back every time."
Zimmermann (4-6) certainly did his part in keeping the Giants off the
basepaths and closed the door on their only rally of the evening.
Aubrey Huff opened the second inning with a triple and Nate Schierholtz
followed with a double. Zimmermann never allowed the Giants a sniff of a
rally the rest of the way.
"We had a tough time scoring runs," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "We woke
up in the second inning, which was a good sign, but we couldn't get another
run. We got pretty quiet in the last few innings with the bats."
The Giants have had 26 of their first 61 games decided by one run, tied with
the Minnesota Twins for most in the Major Leagues. They have won 17 of them.
Of the past 14 games, nine have been decided by one run, including each of
the last four.
"I had to work hard out there," starter Jonathan Sanchez said. "I had the
bases loaded twice and I got out of it twice. I had to battle out there all
night. I just didn't go deep in the game. That was it."
Sanchez (4-4) continued having control issues, walking five and striking out
six over five innings. He gave up both runs on four hits.
Sanchez has walked 15 batters over his last three starts and has 45 in 74 1/3
innings this season. He has allowed the most free passes (5.44 per nine
innings) in the National League and ranks second in the Majors. Sanchez has
given up 55 hits.
"He was just off with his command," Bochy said. "But I will say that he
battled. He actually did a pretty good job having to pitch with so much
traffic. His pitch count got up there and five was enough for him."
There was some good news for Sanchez. He has held the opposition to five hits
or fewer in 10 of his 13 starts.
The Giants are probably happy they won't be seeing much of Zimmermann the
rest of the way. The Nationals' starter is 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA against San
Francisco this season.
"He's got good stuff," Freddy Sanchez said. "There's not much else you can
say. He throws a lot of strikes."
After Schierholtz's double, Zimmermann retired 18 of the final 22 batters he
faced and never allowed a runner past first base during that span.
The Giants have won just two of the six meetings with Washington this season,
their first losing series to the Nationals in four years.
The Giants' bullpen added another four scoreless innings to its resume and
has not allowed a run in 17 innings on the current homestand.
Washington left 11 runners on base and has stranded 20 in two games.
