Lefty Sanchez scheduled for first rehab start

SAN DIEGO -- Jonathan Sanchez will continue his recovery from biceps
tendinitis by pitching Sunday for Class A Advanced San Jose against Inland
Empire.
Sanchez is expected to throw approximately 50 pitches at San Jose. If he
feels whole after that start, he'll likely make an appearance for Triple-A
Fresno before being activated from the 15-day disabled list.
Sanchez was cleared for the San Jose outing after throwing 32 pitches in a
simulated game during the Giants' workout Wednesday night at PETCO Park.
Throwing his entire array of deliveries, the left-hander tested his arm by
facing Andres Torres, Mark DeRosa and Emmanuel Burriss.
"I felt strong," Sanchez said Thursday. "I felt like I could have thrown more
pitches."
Giants manager Bruce Bochy sidestepped the issue of how the Giants will clear
roster room for Sanchez when he's activated. After all, Bochy still has the
luxury of avoiding that conundrum.
"I'll cross that bridge when I we get to it," Bochy said. He added, "If
everybody's healthy, maybe it's time to give someone a break."
But Bochy emphasized that he was not committing to a six-man rotation or a
situation in which Sanchez would be occasionally slotted into the rotation.

Vogelsong adjusts to long layoff
SAN DIEGO -- Ryan Vogelsong felt no concern over the gaping nine-day break
he'll have between starts, noting that he'll simply throw a little more to
stay sharp.
Vogelsong, who will pitch Monday's series opener against the Dodgers at AT&T
Park, said that he'll compensate partly by extending his between-starts
bullpen session Friday.
"I usually throw a pretty long 'pen to begin with," the All-Star right-hander
said.
Vogelsong added that he'll play more catch than usual in the next couple of
days.
Vogelsong, whose most recent outing occurred last Friday against the Mets,
will have the longest post-All-Star-break hiatus among any of the Giants'
starters. Madison Bumgarner pitched Thursday on seven days' rest, Tim
Lincecum will work Friday on five days' rest, Barry Zito will have had an
eight-day break when he starts Saturday and Matt Cain will receive six days
off.
Tejada visits home to deliver aid to schoolkids
SAN DIEGO -- Miguel Tejada experienced what perhaps was the busiest All-Star
break among all the Giants.
It also might have been the most rewarding.
Tejada and his wife, Alejandra, returned to his hometown of Bani in the
Dominican Republic to donate 2,500 backpacks filled with school supplies to
children in the area. This was the latest of several humanitarian efforts
Tejada has initiated to help his countrymen.
"School supplies there are expensive," Tejada explained. "If you're a parent
and you have three or four children, it's very tough."
Tejada distributed the backpacks Tuesday and received permission from manager
Bruce Bochy to skip Wednesday night's workout at PETCO Park.
Worth noting
‧ Bochy's reaction upon seeing a photograph of closer Brian Wilson sporting
his one-piece spandex "tuxedo" at the ESPY Awards: "Oh, my goodness."
‧ It sounded as if Jim Riggleman, who resigned as the Washington Nationals
manager last month, will join the Giants as a special assignments scout and
consultant. Bochy said that he could not "officially" announce that Riggleman
had joined general manager Brian Sabean's staff.
‧ According to the Elias Sports Bureau, each of the four teams that reached
the League Championship Series in both leagues last year -- the Giants,
Phillies, Rangers and Yankees -- reached the All-Star break 10 games above
.500 or better for only the third time since divisional play began in 1969.
