Bullpen stellar as Giants top Brewers

SAN FRANCISCO -- As good as the Giants' starting rotation has been all
season, games like Saturday night's in AT&T Park show why their bullpen is
just as valuable.
Having labored through a few difficult frames, right-hander Ryan Vogelsong
left after five innings with San Francisco clinging to a one-run lead.
Relievers Santiago Casilla, Jeremy Affeldt, Sergio Romo, Javier Lopez and
Brian Wilson combined to throw four shutout innings and preserve the 4-2
victory.
The Giants bullpen has allowed only one run in 30 2/3 innings since the
All-Star break. Equally astonishing, the relief corps has allowed exactly one
hit in its last five games (12 1/3 innings).
Offensively, the Giants had just enough against Brewers left-hander Randy
Wolf, who had been a challenge for them in the past. San Francisco got the
final word in two back-and-forth middle innings, taking a one-run lead over
the Brewers in the bottom of the fifth and never relinquishing it thanks to
another lockdown performance by the bullpen.
Aaron Rowand led off the fifth with a single to left and moved to second on
Mike Fontenot's sacrifice bunt. Pablo Sandoval put runners on the corners
with an infield single that barely tapped off his bat, and Aubrey Huff's
sacrifice fly scored Rowand, giving the Giants a 3-2 lead. They added one run
of insurance in the eighth, when Andres Torres' single scored Cody Ross.
That was more than enough for the Giants' bullpen. Despite walking two
batters and throwing a wild pitch in the sixth, Casilla escaped without any
further damage. Affeldt took over for him in the seventh, sitting down the
Brewers in order.
Romo then took over in the eighth, inducing a flyout by Mark Kotsay and
striking out Ryan Braun. In 11 appearances since June 30, Romo has allowed
one hit and no walks, striking out 13 batters in 8 2/3 innings. But he gave
way to Javier Lopez, who struck out Prince Fielder to end the eighth.
And Wilson added the finishing touches, picking up his 30th save of the
season while throwing just five pitches to record the last three outs.
In a wild fourth inning, Giants bench coach Ron Wotus was ejected with Rickie
Weeks at the plate for arguing the strike zone with home-plate umpire Sam
Holbrook. Weeks went on to knock a full-count double to left field. That
inning also included a play at the plate -- when Ross and Chris Stewart
connected to tag out Weeks and keep the score at 1-0 following Braun's solo
shot to left field off Vogelsong -- and Stewart catching Casey McGehee
attempting a delayed steal from third base.
Vogelsong once again qualified for the National League ERA lead at 2.10,
allowing two earned runs on seven hits and two walks, but he will only remain
atop the leaderboard until Wednesday.
