Sabean: Nothing imminent on trade front
By Adam Berry / MLB.com | 07/24/11 4:30 PM ET
SAN FRANCISCO -- With a week remaining until the July 31 Trade Deadline,
Giants general manager Brian Sabean said his club -- the subject of much
speculation -- is "not close to anything right now."
Sabean confirmed he has spoken to many teams, including the Mets, and again
emphasized his desire to add an all-around hitter who can drive in runs. Mets
outfielder Carlos Beltran has been the focus of many rumors, and it is widely
known the Giants would like to boost their lineup with a middle-of-the-order
hitter.
"I think we need to upgrade. Whether that can happen in a significant way,
I'm not sure. The talent pool isn't in our favor," Sabean said Sunday.
"Having said that, I don't believe there's one silver bullet. Quite frankly,
the lineup needs a lot of help. It might not be just one player."
Sabean also said he has a "definite no-trade list" of prospects -- about
three or four players, he added -- and he knows how important it will be to
keep young pitching in the farm system. Additionally, any trade the Giants
make would have to be for a premium player or a noticeable upgrade at a given
position. Sabean previously said there were no upgrades available at
shortstop or catcher, and he said Sunday that several players rumored to be
available aren't actually on the market.
The Giants do have a few things working in their favor as the deadline
approaches, Sabean acknowledged, including their lead in the National League
West and dominant pitching staff. He was also aware the second-place D-backs
will be looking to boost their pitching, putting more pressure on the Giants
to acquire a bat and extend their lead.
Sabean admitted he would be disappointed if no deal is made by the Deadline,
but he still expressed confidence in the team as it stands.
"This is a pretty stout group. We're known for our pitching, and we are in
first place," Sabean said. "Who knows, they might be able to be good enough
to pull this off."

Playing time paying off for hot Schierholtz
SAN FRANCISCO -- Over the last month, Nate Schierholtz has been one of the
hottest hitters in the National League, batting a league-high .370 with three
home runs and 17 RBIs since June 25.
Schierholtz attributed much of his recent success to simply getting
consistent playing time, which was harder to come by earlier this season, but
Giants manager Bruce Bochy said the left-handed hitter has forced the issue
with his play on the field.
"That's what you want to do with any of these guys. We're staying open-minded
as far as who's playing and who we think is swinging the bat well," Bochy
said. "I think it's fair to say Nate has won that job out there the way he's
playing. I'm very happy for him. There's been other times where it didn't
quite happen. He's always had the talent. Now, it's starting to surface."
Even against a tough left-hander like Randy Wolf on Saturday, Schierholtz
picked up three hits and drove in two runs. The right fielder has hit lefties
well in his career, batting .326 with a .815 on-base plus slugging
percentage, and said his lower numbers against lefties this year were a
product of inconsistent playing time at the beginning of the season.
"I think that's a key, just coming to the park knowing you're going to play
most of the time, if not every day," he said. "It's just a good feeling."

Giants give Belt starting nod in left field
SAN FRANCISCO -- Giants rookie Brandon Belt got the start in left field in
Sunday's series finale against the Brewers, his first game in the outfield
since being recalled last week.
Belt has spent most of his time in the Majors and Minors at first base, but
he said he split his time evenly between the outfield and first base with
Triple-A Fresno. That was enough for Giants manager Bruce Bochy to put Belt
in left field, keeping Aubrey Huff at first against right-hander Yovani
Gallardo.
"We're trying to find ways to get him in there occasionally, and left field
being a spot he had some time at in Fresno, he's comfortable out in the
outfield," Bochy said. "He gives us another left-handed bat out there, plus
we've got a day game today."
Worth noting
‧ The Giants will head to the White House on Monday, and those expecting
bearded closer Brian Wilson to break out his spandex tuxedo might be
disappointed. Asked after Saturday night's 4-2 win if he would be in
traditional dress, Wilson quipped, "Dress? I'm not going to wear a dress.
"No, it's just a regular travel day. You're not supposed to dress up on
travel days. It's only for your off-days," Wilson continued. "So, I'll be
wearing a nice suit like everyone else. Maybe a power navy blue with a red
tie."
‧ Bochy said Miguel Tejada was "coming along fine" and felt good. Tejada, on
the 15-day disabled list with a lower abdominal strain, should begin baseball
activities in a few days, Bochy added.
‧ Bochy liked what he saw out of Huff on Saturday night. Huff went 1-for-1
with a sacrifice fly that drove in the tiebreaking run and, perhaps more
importantly, drew two walks in his first two at-bats.
"I think that's going to be big for him," Bochy said. "Lay off the pitches
and try to keep from doing too much and trying to be the guy. Just keep
things moving down the line."
