Sanchez better, may not miss start

ATLANTA -- Manager Bruce Bochy sounded optimistic about left-hander Jonathan
Sanchez's chances of recovering from his sprained left ankle quickly enough
to make his next scheduled start Sunday at Houston.
"He's actually doing much better," Bochy said Wednesday, one day after
Sanchez injured himself while trying to field a third-inning bunt. "There is
a possibility he'll make his next start."
Bochy said that Sanchez will continue to undergo intensive treatment from the
Giants' athletic training staff for another couple of days before he's
allowed to attempt baseball-related activities.
In other injury-related developments, second baseman Jeff Keppinger remained
day to day with a bruised right wrist. Keppinger said Wednesday that he was
examined by a hand specialist, who told him that he risks extensive surgery
-- a procedure which could be career-ending, at worst -- if he tries to play
again too quickly and breaks a bone in the wrist.
"The bone's a little bit weaker right now and more susceptible to injury,"
Keppinger said.
Right fielder Nate Schierholtz returned to the lineup Wednesday, two days
after fouling a ball off his right foot. Schierholtz said that he was not
fully recovered but felt healthy enough to play -- unlike Tuesday, when he
didn't budge from the bench in San Francisco's 2-1, 11-inning loss.
Outfielder Aaron Rowand deemed himself available to play defensively or
pinch-hit despite a strained muscle in his left rib cage.
