Bochy Weighs In On Pablo's Poundage
Posted Feb 11, 2012
Sandoval may have a big new contract, but the Giants still want him to slim
down.
--3B Pablo Sandoval seemed free and easy at the Giants' recent fanfest in the
wake of his All-Star season. He was the Giants' first All-Star position
player since the days of LF Barry Bonds, and now he has a three-year, $17.15
million contract to call his own. It was a huge show of faith by the Giants,
who saw the Panda's weight balloon before his aggressive weight-loss program
after the 2010 season. Still, manager Bruce Bochy said Sandoval still needs
to shed some weight before spring training.
--RHP Matt Cain put his San Francisco home up for sale. Does it mean he was
preparing to leave the Giants as a free agent after the 2012 season? Not at
all, he said. This isn't the first time he tried to move the property. Back
in September 2011, it was listed for $1,950,000. A month later, it dropped to
$1,795,000. It was pulled off the market in December, and it's back on the
market at the same price -- $255,000 less than the $2,050,000 he bought it
for in 2008.
--RHP Brian Wilson will draw much attention when he makes his Cactus League
debut after getting shut down in August because of an elbow strain. "Could I
have pitched? Yes, but they took the necessary precautions based on that I'm
an employee, I'm an investment, and they'd like me to pitch this year and
next year, not just last year," Wilson said. The closer can be a free agent
after the 2013 season, and he's signed through 2012. The Giants said they're
open to extending Wilson's contract, but he must reprove his value first.
--RHP Guillermo Mota and INF Ryan Theriot, who signed with the Giants late in
the offseason, were added to the 40-man roster. The Mota transaction was a
long time coming. He agreed to terms in December, but he didn't officially
return to the Giants until recently, giving the front office time to
manipulate the 40-man roster. As for Theriot, he comes from the champion
Cardinals after hitting .271 in 132 games.
--OF Justin Christian, 31, was designated for assignment so that RHP
Guillermo Mota and INF Ryan Theriot both would fit on the 40-man roster,
which now is full with 40 players. The move came just a few days after
Christian attended the Giants' fanfest, a promotional event that drew most of
the Giants to their San Francisco ballpark. Christian played 18 games for the
Giants last year and hit .255, his first taste of the majors since a stint
with the Yankees in 2008.
BY THE NUMBERS: 90 -- Times Giants runners scored from second base on singles
last year. It happened 90 of 157 times, 57 percent, ranking 12th in the NL.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "My goal is to have a Gold Glove one day." -- 3B Pablo
Sandoval, who was runner-up in NL Gold Glove voting among third basemen in
2011, finishing behind the Phillies' Placido Polanco.

Spring training starts with sluggers in new places
Tim Lincecum thought about the seismic shifts of baseball's offseason, the
ones that saw Albert Pujols and Prince Fielder migrate to the American League.
''I think it's great,'' San Francisco's two-time Cy Young Award winner joked.
''I won't have to pitch to them anymore.''
