Barely a week into the season, the Giants have to deal with an injury that
will affect them probably for the rest of 2012: Closer Brian Wilson has
"structural issues" with his right elbow, in the words of manager Bruce
Bochy. And, Bochy conceded Saturday afternoon, Wilson "likely ... is heading
toward surgery."
The Giants planned to get second and third opinions on the MRI exam Wilson
had Friday. But assuming those opinion aren't dramatically different, Wilson
appears to be out for the season.
He very well might see Dr. James Andrews, who examined Wilson in August. The
man known for his nasty slider and distinctive beard went on the disabled
list soon thereafter and made only two more appearances in 2011.
The Giants insisted during the offseason that there wasn't any structural
damage to his elbow. For someone who had Tommy John surgery when he was at
LSU, Saturday's news had to hit Wilson hard.
"You feel for Willie," Bochy said. "He's worked hard on his rehab. He's been
down a long road.
"We didn't have any hiccups. It all went well. Spring training went well with
the rehab. We checked off every box with him, back-to-back days. It looked
like he was all set to go, and then this happened."
Wilson declined to speak with reporters Saturday. Through a Giants spokesman,
Wilson said he will talk Sunday.
He made his 2012 debut in the Giants' 17-8 loss at Colorado on Wednesday. He
picked up the save - even though he allowed a run on three hits and a walk -
in their 4-2 win Thursday.
During Thursday's ninth inning, Wilson appeared hurt, and Bochy and head
trainer Dave Groeschner visited the mound. Wilson finished the game, though
he apparently was hiding his pain.
"Just talking to him today," Groeschner said, "he definitely felt something
the other day. He didn't tell us that the other day."
You can make the case Wilson was as important as any member of the Giants in
their World Series-winning season of 2010. He tied Robb Nen's franchise
record with 48 saves and had a 1.81 ERA. In 11 2/3 postseason innings, Wilson
went 1-0 with six saves and did not allow an earned run.
He wasn't quite as dominant last season, but still went 6-4 with a 3.11 ERA
and 36 saves. When Wilson went on the disabled list in mid-August, Bochy
employed a closer-by-committee approach. Santiago Casilla went 6-for-6 in
save opportunities in that stretch.
For the short term, anyway, Bochy said he'll use his bullpen in a similar
fashion. Bochy said he'll "use everybody, (the) hot hand. Casilla will end up
saving some games. With (Sergio) Romo and (Javier) Lopez, we think we're in
good hands there. That's the game plan right now."
The Giants planned to put Wilson on the DL either late Saturday night or
early Sunday morning. Ryan Vogelsong will come off the DL to make his 2012
debut Sunday.
Bochy commended Wilson for how he was dealing with the news.
"He was unbelievable, how positive he was, how upbeat he was," Bochy said. "I
mean, sure, he's disappointed at what's happened.
"We all feel terrible, but he says, 'Hey, I'll be back and meanwhile, I'm
going to be here to help you guys.' That's been his attitude"
