Jankovic Keeps Cruising
QUEBEC CITY, Canada - Jelena Jankovic started her quest for a second Sony
Ericsson WTA Tour title in style, cruising past 2003 Bell Challenge finalist
Milagros Sequera, 61 63, on Wednesday. The top-seeded Serb needs four more
wins to put the icing on a tremendous turnaround season.
American teenager Vania King won't be an easy obstacle on Thursday. The two
clashed earlier this year at Wimbledon and Jankovic prevailed 6-4 in the third.
She then defeated Venus Williams in the next round, which might have given her
some of the confidence for her breakthrough summer. Not only did she make her
first final of the year at Los Angeles, she also reached her first career
Grand Slam semifinal at the US Open. Her recent fall results catapulted her
up the rankings close to Top 10 territory.
No.2 seed Marion Bartoli hopes to meet Jankovic in Sunday's final. The
Frenchwoman won her seventh Bell Challenge match on Wednesday, dismissing
Laura Granville, 64 63. Up next awaits another American, namely No.6 seed
Shenay Perry. Bartoli has a 3-0 edge in this head-to-head series. Their most
recent encounter took place here exactly a year ago in the quarterfinals and Bartoli prevailed in straight sets.
Unseeded Martina Sucha also secured a spot in the quarterfinal line-up. The 2004 champ ousted No.5 Sybille Bammer, 75 64, and will meet either Severine Brémond or Greta Arn. Sucha already sports an impressive 10-1 record at this event.
The only Canadian player left in the draw, Aleksandra Wozniak, also broke through to the quarterfinals with a 61 64 win over Ashley Harkleroad. She will play either Lilia Osterloh or Anastassia Rodionova next.
