Jankovic, Henin first to qualify for year-end Madrid final

Carlsbad, California - Serb Jelena Jankovic was all smiles on Wednesday after
qualifying along with world number one Justine Henin in the first two places
for November's WTA Championships. The Madrid final starting November 6 features
the top eight players in the world.
Henin, with five titles this year including a fourth Roland Garros trophy, has
not played since losing a Wimbledon semi-final to Marion Bartoli.
Jankovic, competing at this week's Acura Classic, will be the first Serb to
play the year-ender. Little more than a year ago, ten opening-round defeats had
her ready to quit the game and head for university.
"Here I am, number three and in the world and already qualified at this point
of the season," said the 22-year-old. "I'm delighted to be part of such an
elite event."
Jankovic, who won the Wimbledon mixed doubles with Scot Jamie Murray, won four
titles in the first half of the season.
"Now I can relax and give a chance to the other girls. Seriously, it's so
important for me to qualify," she said.
"I have won events on three different surfaces this season. This does a lot for
my confidence. I just want to try and play may game like always, and be the
best that I can."
Jankovic said that her Rome turnaround in 2006 which kept her in the game - she
reached the quarter-finals and took Venus Williams to three sets - was thanks
to the encouragement of her mother, who travels with her.
"Otherwise I might have gone back to university. Today I would be behind a
ton of books trying to become a genius," she joked. "Being number three now is
just a fairy tale."
