2019 US Open Interview: Denis Shapovalov https://pse.is/L3D36 Denis Shapovalov has enjoyed plenty of firsts in New York, including his first junior Grand Slam title in 2015 and first Grand Slam main-draw win in 2017. He’s looking to add to that this year by reaching the second week of a major for the first time. Shapovalov will play his first-round match against fellow Canadian and No. 18 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime, whom he teamed up with in 2015 to win the US Open boys’ doubles title. It’s a rematch of their opening-round clash last year, which saw Shapovalov prevail after Auger-Aliassime was forced to retire in the third set due to a reoccurring heart problem. USOpen.org: Even as a junior, your results have been outstanding at the US Open. What about the tournament suits you so well? Denis Shapovalov: The vibe of New York City is what gets me going. The fans are so rowdy and so loud, which always makes it so much fun to be out there. Out of all the Grand Slams, the US Open is special for me because it’s the closest one to Canada. It’s the one I always wanted to go play and see what it’s all about. It’s absolutely unbelievable as a sporting event, so I’m really looking forward to getting going. USOpen.org: Are there any matches you remember watching as a kid that really stood out for you? Denis Shapovalov: The one that really stood out for me was when Andy Murray beat Novak Djokovic [in the 2012 US Open final]. Juan Martin del Potro beating Roger Federer [in the 2009 US Open final] is another one, but there have been so many. USOpen.org: What about your own matches? Denis Shapovalov: Winning the boys’ doubles event with Felix was my first Grand Slam title of any kind. I feel like I’ve been able to play exceptionally well any time I go to the site. The second-round match against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga [in 2017] was one of the cleanest matches I’ve ever played in my career. It’s tough to perform that well every time, but hopefully I can bring some of that magic back. USOpen.org: What are some of the things you enjoy seeing or doing off the court? Denis Shapovalov: There are so many great spots in New York, and anywhere you go is unbelievable. I try to walk around Central Park and Times Square every year, just embrace the New York atmosphere. We try to eat before matches at the Whole Foods in Central Park. I love how everything’s so rowdy and happening so quickly. It fits my personality really well. USOpen.org: How would you assess your form heading into your first round? Denis Shapovalov: I’m feeling really excited. I’ve had solid runs there before and when you have good feelings at a tournament, it always sticks with you when you come back. I’ve been playing a lot better lately, so I feel mentally fresh and ready to go.
