Former Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova had also pulled out of the Rome event with an injury to her right foot, they said. Frenchwoman Mauresmo won the last two editions of the Open but suffered her heaviest defeat of 2006 on Saturday when she was beaten 6-1 6-2 by Belgium's Justine Henin-Hardenne in the semi-finals of the Berlin claycourt event. In Mauresmo's absence, Belgium's Kim Clijsters takes over the number one seeding in Rome.
