Television Commercial is Tennis Star's First Gatorade Spot
The melodies of the song, "Maria," from the musical West Side
Story, will soon be echoing throughout homes around the world
when Gatorade debuts a new ad featuring one of the world's
best female tennis players, Maria Sharapova.? The new spot
represents the first for Sharapova as the newest member of
the Gatorade family of athletes.
In the ad, entitled "Maria," Sharapova is seen decimating a
series of overmatched and exhausted opponents. Sharapova
unleashes a booming serve, powerful forehands and a perfect
backhand. During a changeover, a frustrated opponent swats away
her bottle of water while a confident and fresh-looking
Sharapova rehydrates with Gatorade before returning to the
court and quickly finishing the match.
"When you're playing in the heat, it takes a lot more than
water to stay hydrated," said Sharapova.? "It takes a lot of
hard work and practice to play well, but there are definitely
advantages to drinking Gatorade.? This ad really shows the
benefits in a fun and creative way."
"In this ad and on the court, Sharapova makes winning look
easy.? But she knows that drinking Gatorade - with its
scientifically-proven formula of carbohydrates and electrolytes -
can help you in ways that water can't," said Ron Coughlin,
senior vice president and chief marketing officer for PepsiCo
International.? "Through this spot and her work with the
Beat the Heat hydration education campaign, Sharapova is doing
a great job of educating athletes and active people about
how proper hydration can help you perform at your peak."
Gatorade will debut this ad in countries throughout the world,
beginning in early April.? The ad was created by Element
79 Partners, directed by Andrusha Waddington of Conspiracao
Films and shot in Costa Rica.
