MARIA SHARAPOVA: She's not the current number one player in
the world, she may not be the one with more talent, she's
not the more winning and maybe today she's not also the stronger
one. But queques are only for her, all the media and audience
attention is always for her. We're gonna tell you her story,
from the siberian beginning to the worldwide success...
DREAMING OF MASHA: She's the most famous
She's the most rich
She's the most payed
She's the most requested
She's the most clicked
She's the most charming
She's the most desired
She's the most awaited"

Baricco wrote that someone has America in his eyes and there's
someone who see America in his own future. It was surely like
this also for Yuri, a big man born in west Ukraine with his hair
already grizzled and a great passion for skiing and tennis. It
has been surely like this cause in March 1993 he took a beautiful
child by the hand, left everything behind and went away. His
daughter hadn't still turned six but she took her second-hand
racquet, she tied her long blonde ponytail, she took her father
by the hand and she left with him for America. That child was
Masha. Maria would been born only after that flight upon the
ocean.
A journey that she hadn't take her only in Florida, she took her
to the win in the grass courts of Church Road at seventeen and
she took her to be the first russian female player to be number
one in the world.
Surely you can't blame the ones who say that Maria is the not
the most talentuos player in the world; there's Henin with her
great backhand and her volèe. Or you can't blame the ones who
see Serena Williams as the strongest one (Serena has beaten
Maria two times this year: at the Australian Open and in Miami).
But you have to ponder what you say cause Maria has already
turned twenty and she still has a lot to give. In any case if
you talk with someone about tennis, you're gonna see that he's
gonna think about Federer and...Sharapova. She's the one who
has all the media attention, everyone wants her autograph, a
lot of tickets are bought only to see her. Not Justine. Not
Serena. Or maybe also Justine and Serena, but first comes
Maria.
But we were talking about the journey, the real one. As a lot
of people of their same country in the first years of XX century,
father and daughter made a lot of miles to reach the States.
Years ago they arrived in Ellis Island with cardboard suitecases
and a lot of communication problems, Yuri and Masha arrived in
Miami with two bags full of racquets and 700 $ in their pockets.
: http://0rz.tw/8d2E1
Those 700 $ were enough only for the bus and not many other
things. Passport and visa to follow husband and daughter didn't
arrive in time for mom Yelena and she was forced to stay at home.
Yuri and Maria hardly spoke english and all the money in their
pockets should have forced anyone to come back home, to give to
the little baby a mom back and to not risk anything for a "vision".
But it didn't go like this. Mom Yelena kept living alone in Sochi,
a city near the black sea. The Sharapov arrived there in 1989.
Before of that, in 1986, with Jelena pregnant with a future
Wimbledon winner, the Sharapov were forced to leave Gomel, in
Byelorussia, to go to Nyagan in West Siberia. For a pregnant
woman and for her baby it wasn't sure to keep breathing the
corrupted Chernobyl air so the 19 April 1987 in the cold and
worker Nyagan City Masha born. As we said she wouldn't live
there for a long time, only a couple of winters and then she
would have left for Sochi. But in these first years the leading
actor is still Yuri. He was a passionate skier but he didn't
dislike also to play some tennis. "It was like this that I fell
in love with tennis, dad used to play often and I liked watching
him play. One day, I was four years old, I took a racquet in my
hands and since that I remember that I used to play four hours
against a wall in a Sochi park".
Dad realized that her daughter passion had to be improved. So
he started to bring her daughter more often on the courts and
he took her to some competition near home. Maria loved to play
tennis for real, not to watch it on tv, she didn't have any
idol, model or favourite champions. "I didn't have any poster
of any tennis player in my room. When I was a little girl I
only admired my parents, I wanted to learn from them and to be
like them. "
And in fact in 1993 Masha didn't go to Moscow to see Kremlin
Cup, she went there to follow one of those campus that Yuri
loved so much. And in this occasion Yuri understood what he
had to do. Maria was playing on a court with him and Martina
Navratilova passed by and said "She has talent: it took three
words from that legend, Yuri didn't need more. How can you not
trust a multiple Wimbledon winner if she says to your daughter
that she has talent And so he departed from Sochi to go beyond
the Atlantic Ocean.

PINK BOX:
Maybe not everyone knows that...
Masha was born left-handed: when she was ten years old she played

definitively the right hand.

teenagers who would have changed the world in the next millennium.
She loves consider herself as a "renaissance woman" for the
passions she cultivates. She loves literature, museums and
paintings. She also loves studying fashion and learning new
languages. She speakes english, russian and she's learning spanish.
She has been the first russian woman to reach the number one
spot in the ranking. It was August 22, 2005.

In 2004 her name has been the most searched on the Internet.
Maria did better than Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, Pamela

In Bradenton streets are all basically straight and when they
cross they form right angles, like in almost every american city.
If you watch Bradenton from the air you will see a grid, a
geometric monotony which maniacal order warmed by Florida sun
is sometimes interrupted by the green of some 100 yard destined
to football and from a 50 rectangles who seems like tennis
courts. Right in one of these parallel lines, the 34 street,
you will find Nick Bollettieri academy. Final destination of
the journey of our two heroes. Beginning point of Masha tennis
career. Yuri entered there with an almost six years old kid and
with a part of that 700 $ that grandparents gave to him for that
adventure. Their english was poor but it was enough to know that
they weren't welcome. There weren't tickets to enter the academy
and in any case the child was too little for the IMG standard
even though she was really good. Come back home and try later
were two concept that couldn't be in Yuri's mind.

"I DON'T HAVE A REAL MOTTO IN MY LIFE, BUT MY PARENTS ALWAYS
TOLD ME TO WORK HARD AND GIVE 100% CAUSE YOU WON'T LOOK BACK
AND THINKING YOU COULD HAVE GIVEN MORE"
Yuri and Maria went living in Venice, a few miles away from
Bradenton. To mantain himself and Maria Yuri had to start
working, two or three works at a time. There weren't tie and
jacket work, there were hard works also because you don't give
easily a work to a russian just arrived in America. These were
two difficult years, also because dad-coach had to find time to
train Maria. But it wasn't only hard times for the Sharapov;
Maria was winning a lot of tournaments and this let her win
scholarship for the Bollettieri academy in 1995. Students
dormitory are just beyond the entrance, after the parking.
Maria lived there for seven months, away from his father who
stayed with her every hour of her life: now she can hug him
only in the week-end. These were seven months who lasted three
times more for Maria: she wasn't speaking english very well and
she was very young and this made her the favourite object of
other students jokes.
In June 1996 another positive turning point: with a brand new
visa even mom Yelena could jump on a plain and reach husband
and daughter in Florida. Our three heroes were finally in the
same city and this let leave our nine years old Maria the
academy dormitory for a house with mom and dad. Century change
and change millennium. It's the 2001, 13 miles southern than
Bradenton, Maria entered for the first time in an ITF draw,
the Sarasota one. She loses in the first round in three sets
from Karin Miller but her personality and her play let everyone
know that Bollettieri accademy would probably have bring out
another champion.
In 2002 Maria has a wild card for the Indian Wells tournament.
Maria plays against a qualifier, Brie Rippner, number 302 in
the wta ranking. She beats her. In the second round she finds
a tennis legend, Monica Seles. Even if Monica wasn't playing
the best tennis, she easily beat the young kid 6-2 6-0. Maria
learned a lot from this loss. In the next three weeks Maria
plays three ITF tournaments. She wins all of them. She closes
2002 with two more finals played and with a 186 ranking.
2003 opens with a couple of unlucky first rounds but also with
her debut in two Grand Slams tournaments. She enters the main
draw in Melbourne and in Paris but she loses in the first
round. The Birmingham tournament is decisive. She enters the
main draw, she beats Dechy and Dementieva. She loses in the
semi from Asagoe but this let her gain 30 places in the ranking
and convince everyone in Church Road to reserve her a wild card.
In the fourth round only Svetlana Kuznetsova ruins her party in
Wimbledon. But in 2004 nobody, not even Serena Williams could
stop her to be the third youngest player to win the Venus
Rosewater Dish.
The rest is nowadays history, tennis history. Maria has just
turned twenty, she won 15 titles with two Grand Slams victory:
at the famous Wimbledon she had infact added also the 2006 US Open.

Just after she converted the decisive match point against Serena
Williams and before she could receive all Centre Court
congratulations for her Wimbledon victory, Maria was already
on the phone. Receiver of the call was mom Yelena. While all
the crowd was cheering for that teen with a veteran determination,
while half of the "aficionados" was trying to forget the ghosts
of a new Kournikova, always beautiful but not much solid on the
court, the other half was asking: "How come? Her father is always
with her but what about her mom? She's not in London to see her
daughter winning Wimbledon?". Well, Yelena and tennis doesn't
come along very well, she likes it but not too much; She can't
stand tournaments. "My mom doesn't love tennis very much since
when I was a little girl. She's very participating in my life,
but when it comes to things that aren't related to this sport.
She's with me when I shot some commercial, when I have to do
some photoshoots or simply when we go to go shopping. Sometimes
she catches me up during one of my journey across the tour, but
she remains only when I train, not during the tournament. "
Anyway that sunny afternoon in 2004 really changed Maria's
life. One of the most positive things to be extremely strong
on the court, to have a body and a model face, to be Wimbled
on queen at 17 is that dollars litterally rain on you. They
arrived to induce her to leave everything behind to become a
beautiful russian spy on the big screen. "No, thanks" it was
Maria's answer probably suggested from dad Yuri.
But Maria's appeal was discovered by Nike a long time ago.
When Maria was ten they made a contract with her. When she was
14 she was on every poster around the world. For example in
Acapulco, during a WTA event, everywhere around city there
were poster of this blonde young girl, but if you weren't a
tennis fan you probably wouldn't know that that girl was Maria.
Nike
But even after Wimbledon win, Mr Sharapov was thinking more
of trainings instead of star system. Actually Maria is not a
real court workaholic. "I know, I know training is extremely
important. But I'm not a person who likes training for a very
long time, I prefer short but intense working sessions". But
Maria will probably have a fit if she will not find the time
for relax one day and half for week. A lot of spare time to
become a "Renessaince woman", just to use her own words."
But if saying that she is inspired by Audrey Hepburn is
pretty normal, saying that she defines herself as a "Reneissance
woman" needs some more explanation. "A Reneissance woman is a
person who is much more compared to what is known for". In
Maria's case tennis. Thanks Masha, banality doesn't live in
Bradenton. But to these words correspond real facts. Above
all her tennistic and commercial duties, she created her own
fragrance, she designes handbags and she maintains a solid
relationship with her fans through her official website
www.mariasharapova.com. She answers their questions and she
makes them part of her "diva life". That time she lost herself
in a suite in Tokyo because it was too big. When on a private
jet she almost fight with the pilot because according to her
he made it "dance" too much. Or when Dolce, her beloved dog
who always stay home ("because I don't wanna be one of that
player who has always dog around"), hugged her for hours.
Characters like Masha divide people. You can love or hate them.
And if this is true for fans, you can imagine how real this is
for her collegues. We can say that some of them didn't show so
much love for Masha. Anastasia Myskina said "If she will play
in Fed Cup, I'm out". But also Justine Henin isn't a Masha and
Yuri fan since last year US Open final when Justine accused
Yuri of being unsporting. He disturbed me during all the match,
Justine said, even calling a ball "out" like he was a judge.
True or not, Yuri received a 2000$ penalty from WTA.
Nowadays Maria is dealing with physical problems, ice, massages
and not so much tennis. But she should come back right in time
for Rome. Even there all the media attention will be for her.
Sorry for Serena, Venus, Martina and the others...
