[新聞]Maria shows maturity
At the ripe old age of 20, Maria Sharapova has been there
and done it when it comes to Wimbledon.
The statuesque Russian reached the fourth round at her
first attempt, aged 16, won the title 12 months later and
reached the semi-finals in each of the last two years.
The reigning US Open champion will begin a fifth assault on
the oldest grand slam tournament as the world number two
and with confidence tempered only by a niggling shoulder
strain.
The second seed insists she is as hungry as ever for
success and also reveals she is continuing to develop her
game in a bid to take it to new heights.
"As the years go on, I'm adding little things to my game,"
she says. "I'm pretty excited once I do it. I'm like
'yippee!'
"Your whole game is set from a young age and it's not like
I'm going to change my grip or change anything dramatic but
you might adjust things and add variety to your game.
"You try to improve little things here and there after
watching your matches on video. That all comes with
experience - that's a key factor in all that."
Sharapova, who remains confident she is over the shoulder
trouble which hampered her throughout the French Open and
the recent DFS Classic in Birmingham, will open her
campaign against 17-year-old Jung-Jan Chan, of Chinese
Taipei.
Her first serious challenge could come in a potential
fourth-round meeting with three-times former champion Venus
Williams.
"As long as I'm healthy, there is no reason I can't win,"
Sharapova added.
"There's a very thin line in tennis between winning and
losing.
"A lot of things can turn very quickly and a lot of that is
mental as well.
"But, as a lot of people know, I'm mentally pretty strong
so that is a big factor."
