One of the two wild cards remaining in the disposition on the tournament’s organizers will be awarded to Maria Sharapova. The former world number one and the winner of three Grand Slam tournaments will compete in Poland for the first time. The 24 year old Russian is not only an excellent tennis player but one of the wealthiest and most recognized female athletes in the world. Maria is returning to competition after a nine month break due to an injury and subsequently a surgical procedure on her shoulder. The Warsaw Open will be her only tournament play preparation before the French Open this year. Maria’ s last opponent in 2008 was Marta Domachowska, who may very well be her first in 2009 as the Pole is competing in the tournament’s main draw thanks to another wild card.
