:p Matt Cronin http://msn.foxsports.com/tennis/story/9945918/Sharapova- making-way-back-from-shoulder-injury-- August 17, 2009, 4:19 PM EDT 0 comments On occasions during those days last fall in which her surgically repaired shoulder hurt so much that she couldn't even walk on the beach without wincing, three-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova thought back to some of her greatest triumphs. It's a fairly substantial list, that must include her shocking upset of Serena Williams in the 2004 Wimbledon final, her beat down of Justine Henin in the 2006 U.S. Open final, or her complete devastation of the 2008 Australian Open field. But there were some other kinds of triumphs that few noticed, the ones that were won based on grit and guile. "When you are 17 and winning Wimbledon it's not so much a freebie, but I never thought I was ready to win it physically or mentally," Sharapova told FOXSports.com. "But something in me was so strong and I didn't let anything bother me. I was almost oblivious to the outside world. 莎娃覺得十七歲時很專心也很堅強。 "When I look back at the matches when I played great, I think about what was going through my mind. Confidence helps and you are on autopilot. I also go back to the tough days when I wasn't feeling great, or I wasn't thinking straight, and still managed to pull it together. I think about how I was able to turn it around." 莎娃回想以前打的好、打不好的日子,想著自己當時腦袋中想什麼。 In October 2008, the now 22-year-old California resident by way of Russia underwent shoulder surgery and didn't return to singles competition until May 2009 in Warsaw. While the ultra aggressive baseliner hasn't reconquered the WTA Tour yet, she's 17-6 since her comeback and is generally heartened by her play during her last six tournaments, where's she pushed her ranking up to No. 49. 莎娃復出以來有 17-6 的戰績,排名回到 49。 A winner of 19 career titles, Sharapova hasn't won a crown since April 2008 at Amelie Island, just a few weeks after she injured her shoulder in a tournament at Indian Wells. 去年四月後至今還沒奪冠,就是印地安泉傷到肩膀的數週後。 On Monday, she'll begin play at the Canadian Open in Toronto, the same place where she was forced to call off her season last year. Then, she wasn't sure whether she'd have to go under the surgeon's knife. But taking a break did her no good and only extended the period in which she was forced to come to terms with the biggest hurdle in her career — how to rediscover her greatness with a surgically repaired playing arm. 最大的挑戰:找回手術前的好。 "The toughest thing was it was touch and go," she said. "I thought I could play the (Sony Ericsson WTA Tour year-end) Championships, then I thought I'd been able to play Australia, but what did I know? It took me four months to where I could go for a jog without my arm hurting. Now I'm laughing about that I thought I'd be ready for Australia." 莎娃說,原本想沒什麼,後來才發現居然花四個月才能達到慢跑 而肩膀不會痛的程度。 Sharapova said she learned to listen to her body and grew more patient with her timetable, but she had more than a few difficult moments. She's a born and bred competitor and while she has off-court interests that include fashion, design and marketing, it's knocking the air out of fuzzy yellow balls that gets her juices flowing. 莎娃說,學會聽身體的話,然後更有耐心對待時程表。 "When I talk about coming from an injury, I don't know how to describe losing something that you've been doing since you were four years old on a daily basis," she said. "Your mind doesn't quite comprehend it." 莎娃說,很難形容失去某個從四歲就天天碰的東西,是怎樣的感覺。 While Sharapova relished certain stages of her time off, it wasn't all red carpet events, as most of the time, she was rehabbing, going back and forth from L.A. to Arizona every Monday through Friday for six months. 休養期多數時候是往來洛杉磯與亞利桑那間。 "It gave me an excuse to have the break, but it wasn't like I could do whatever I wanted to," she said. "As much as I wanted to go on vacation, the last time I went on a trip and did absolutely nothing was over Thanksgiving weekend last year. But personally it was a really great break because I built stronger foundations with my friends and family." 莎娃表示,休養時跟親友相處更多也不錯。 Outside of constant rehab, Sharapova says that there's nothing in life that she doesn't enjoy. She's a giver, buying her paternal grandparents a farm in the mountains an hour outside of Sochi, Russia, a city that she campaigned for to host the 2014 Winter Olympics. While cynics might say she was pushed into lending support to an area where she once lived and first learned to play tennis, anyone who has been on the receiving end of stop-the-cameras glares realizes that it's Maria who makes her own calls. 生活中的一切都很好,重點是不管做什麼,都是她的意思。 "That's one thing with Maria Sharapova is that if she's doing it means she enjoying it," Sharapova said of herself. "Ask anyone in my group: I'm very much in control of my life. I know what I want, I know what I feel is right for me and there's no one better who knows about you then yourself." 莎娃說,自己最知道自己要什麼,所以只要她在做的事情, 就代表她很樂在其中。 While Sharapova has high expectations of how hard she should be competing and of what her level should be on particular days, she's not guaranteeing any stellar performances for the rest of the season. Her camp is now taking aim on an assault of the 2010 Australian Open title, instead of saying she'll be ready to rock at the U.S. Open, which begins in three weeks time. 團隊的主要目標瞄準明年澳網,而非急著對準三週後的美網。 While Sharapova hasn't been racking up titles since May, her play hasn't been as bad as some make it out to be. She's scored five quality wins over Nadia Petrova (twice), Na Li, Alona Bondarenko and Victoria Azarenka, and outside of her confusing performance against Gisela Dulko in the second round of Wimbledon, she seems to be improving every week. 莎娃復出以來也有幾場不錯的勝利,看來也持續進步中。 However, numerous TV commentators have weighed in on what's plaguing Sharapova and most of them have focused on her serve as the reason she hasn't raced back to the top again. But while it's clear that she's still struggling in getting used to her abbreviated motion (which is supposed to decrease the wear and tear on her shoulder and lengthen her career), the Russian says that her shoulder is now 100 percent. 球評多將她的狀況歸咎於發球,她也很明顯還在調適這個為了減輕 肩膀負擔,而修改的動作,但她自己說肩膀狀態沒問題。 She's still not consistently whacking her serves at presurgery speeds, and with her abbreviated motion, she isn't placing it as adeptly either, but that doesn't mean that the stroke cannot become a weapon again in time. 發球還不夠穩不夠準,但不見得未來就不能成為武器。 "Am I happy with it, no," she said after falling to Flavia Pennetta in L.A. "I have a lot of work to do and to make a few tweaks here and there to find something I'm comfortable with and to stick with it. I'll do it as long as I need for that to become perfection. There's nothing that a basket of balls can't achieve." 莎娃在洛杉磯輸給 Pennetta 後說的,努力就對了。 It's not just her serve that a work in progress. Sharapova's fitness level is still not up to par yet, which is why, for example, after four straight three-set wins at the French Open and four exhausting victories at the L.A. Championships, she had little left in the tank in the semifinals, hence her slow movement and lack of pop against Dominica Cibulkova and Pennetta in her losses. 身體狀況也還在改進中。 "There's no better way to get into shape as a tennis player than playing tennis," she said. "I can do all the running or Pilates I want, work myself until I'm blue in the face, but when you go on court for the first time after months on end, your body isn't used to the whole thing." 莎娃說,打球是最好恢復方式。 Without question, Sharapova cannot win the Canadian Open or U.S. Open unless her body holds up. She also needs to vastly improve her net game. 身體跟技術面都得有顯著進步才能衝擊冠軍寶座。 But there have been other elements of her game that have been pretty impressive. Her vicious return of serve, which has always been a key component of her attack, has been terrific at times, and off the ground, when she's been feeling spry, she's keeping up with just about everyone. When she's missing, she's only erring by a hair. 但接發球就很好很銳利很強大。 "It doesn't matter if she just came back, she's still a great player who has skills," said the ninth-ranked Azarenka after her defeat to Sharapova in L.A. Azarenka 在洛杉磯輸給莎娃後說,不管莎娃是不是剛復出,她 就是有兩把刷子。 The willful Sharapova also believes in her skill set and says she "absolutely" can get back to No. 1. She says that she is still feeling her way around the court and that the situation is new territory for her. 莎娃相信自己可以回到第一,現在對球場的感覺很好。 "With every tournament I feel physically I'm getting better and getting a good sense of the court, and movement wise, but it's still a work in progress," she said. "I'd like to forget I was gone for a long time, but you have to put things in perspective. Back in her teenage years, Sharapova would dismiss questions about her strategic approach, and as to whether she needed to add a sound defense to her high-octane offense. Today, she has much better understanding of the court and discusses reading the situations. "I'm pretty pleased with being in different situations and to keep my head up, stay steady and figure out what I have to do and what's Plan B if Plan A didn't work," she said. "The first few tournaments my reflexes were a little off, but now I'm returning better. I'd still like to move a little better, keep improving the serve and keep building my arm up so it can last in how ever many matches I need to win a tournament." There are two elements to her potential success in New York that cannot be overlooked: one, that she'll get a day off in between matches; and two, that the rest of the elite WTA Tour competitors (outside of Serena Williams at the Grand Slams) haven't been very consistent this year. That makes Sharapova a threat to do significant damage. "I'm a competitor and have played many tournaments and won quite a few," said Sharapova, who might have a shot at being seeded at the U.S. Open if she reaches the Toronto final. "You want to be the winner and if someone tells you otherwise they wouldn't be telling the truth."
