Three of the world’s top four WTA Tour players will lead a field which
includes 28 of the world’s top 42 at the Brisbane International, played at
the Queensland Tennis Centre from 3-9 January 2016, as defending champion
Maria Sharapova is joined by world no. 2 Simona Halep and 2014 Wimbledon
runner-up Garbine Muguruza.
Held in the first regular week of the season, the Brisbane International – a
joint ATP-WTA event first played in 2009 – always attracts a top-ranking
field. With just two weeks to prepare for the first Grand Slam of the year,
which begins in Melbourne on 18 January, many of the WTA Tour’s finest opt
to tune up their games for the Australian Open at the Premier-level Brisbane
International, which has offered $1 million in prize money since 2013.
Five of the six women who have won the Brisbane International title have or
have gone on to become Grand Slam champions, with Victoria Azarenka (2009),
Kim Clijsters (2010), Petra Kvitova (2011), Serena Williams (2013-14) and
Maria Sharapova (2015) all multiple Grand Slam winners and among the sport’s
most popular stars. And with such a strong field set to play the 2016 event,
it looks like the next woman to lift the Evonne Goolagong Trophy in Brisbane
will be no exception.
World no. 2 Simona Halep, now coached by Darren Cahill, has opted to begin
her 2016 season at the Brisbane International as she attempts to trade up the
International-level Shenzhen Open trophy in 2015 for the Premier-level WTA
Brisbane crown. The top seed, a US Open semifinalist and winner of a trio of
titles in 2015, hasn’t played in Brisbane since she lost to Kim Clijsters on
her debut in 2012.
Not so for second seed and defending champion Maria Sharapova. The five-time
Grand Slam champion started 2015 in style when she won 10 of her first 11
matches of the season, claiming the Brisbane International title with a
three-set victory over Ana Ivanovic in the final and finishing runner-up to
Serena Williams at the Australian Open, but despite winning another title in
Rome and reaching the Wimbledon semifinals, Sharapova’s year was largely a
tale of injuries and struggles for fitness. But the Russian shone when she
returned to action at the very end of the season, reaching the semifinals of
the WTA Finals Singapore and winning both her singles rubbers during the Fed
Cup final, and the ever-hungry world no. 4 will be eager to get her season
off to a good start by retaining her Brisbane International title.
Halep and Sharapova are joined by world no. 3 Garbine Muguruza, the
breakthrough star of women’s tennis in 2015 when she reached the Wimbledon
final and went on to win the title at the China Open, one of the biggest
events in women’s tennis outside the four Grand Slams. Muguruza will be
making her debut appearance at the Brisbane International.
Sharapova isn’t the only Grand Slam champion in the field – she is joined
by US Open champion Samantha Stosur, and while Stosur doesn’t traditionally
play well in Australia, her native land, the same can’t be said for two-time
Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka, who will be looking for her
second Brisbane International title after winning the inaugural event in 2009.
Also in the field are Angelique Kerber, four times a Premier-level champion
in 2015; French Open semifinalist Timea Bacsinszky; Toronto 2015 champion
Belinda Bencic and 2014 Australian Open runner-up Dominika Cibulkova. But
there is hardly a hard-to-recognize name in the field, with the lowest-ranked
player entered for the 2016 Brisbane International world no. 42 Alize Cornet.
With such a packed field, the matches will be gripping from the earliest
rounds and with everybody rested and ready to go after the off-season, the
competition will be fierce at the 2016 Brisbane International when it is
played 3-9 January.
