By Tom Moore Staff writer | 0 comments Friday’s 99-86 home victory over the Celtics was meaningful and exciting. The 76ers broke open a close game with a 37-17 third-quarter advantage to move 1½ games ahead of Boston in the Atlantic Division. But let’s not kid ourselves. Should the Sixers manage to hold onto the division and earn the accompanying No. 4 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs, they aren’t winning more than one round — and that’s not looking as likely as it did a month ago. A team that doesn’t win when it’s close — the Sixers are 0-8 this season in games decided by four or fewer points and 2-14 in games decided by less than eight — probably isn’t going to be successful in down-to-the-wire, playoff contests. Even if the Sixers advance in the postseason for the first time since 2003 (Larry Brown’s last year here), Rod Thorn needs to make some significant changes next summer. In other words, the Sixers’ roster needs an overhaul. The Sixers’ flaws are becoming more apparent and opponents are taking advantage of them. That partially explains their 5-9 record in the last 14 home games. The Sixers have too many guys who want to initiate the offense (Jrue Holiday, Evan Turner and Andre Iguodala) and no 20-point, reliable end-of-game scorers. The Sixers also lack a quality — or even a decent — low-post scorer/interior defender. Elton Brand is a pretty good mid-range shooter, but lacks the quickness and jumping ability to get his shot off inside. Spencer Hawes played well early in the season, but the strained Achilles sidelined him and limited his effectiveness over the past two months. Re-signing Hawes, who becomes an unrestricted free agent July 1, could be worth considering at the right price if he comes back as the third big man or alongside a top-drawer power forward. It’s hard to imagine the Sixers not using the amnesty provision on Brand. Brand gives everything he has, but age (33) and the wear and tear of 13 NBA seasons make the Sixers paying him $18.2 million next year for 10.6 points and seven rebounds a game a long shot. While soon-to-be unrestricted free agent point guard Deron Williams of the Nets won’t be joining the Sixers, getting below the salary cap by amnestying Brand would allow Thorn to make an uneven trade. For example, they could send Iguodala to a team for a player or players making considerably more money. Iguodala is pocketing $13.5 million this year and $14.7 million in 2012-13. Thorn should explore trading anybody and everybody. That includes Holiday and Turner. Consider every option and make the trade that is best for the Sixers. The odds are it’ll be Iguodala going elsewhere. While he’s a terrific defensive player — one of the best wing defenders in the NBA — and would be difficult to replace at that end, Iguodala remains a No. 3 offensive option best suited to playing with an offensive star. Iguodala’s poor foul shooting — his inexplicable free-throw percentage of 61.8 is the lowest of his eight-year pro career and 25 percent worse than in 2006-07 (82 percent) — seems to have made him hesitant to drive in the fourth quarter of a competitive game. He’s almost an automatic 1-for-2 at the line. Doug Collins has to keep Iguodala on the floor late in games for his defense, but the Sixers cannot afford his offensive trepidation when scoring is so difficult for them at crunch time. Iguodala still has value around the league, however, especially on a very good team. You almost surely cannot get the Lakers’ mammoth Andrew Bynum for him, but you should be able to address one of the team’s numerous needs.
