Maurice 'Moe' Harkless selected 15th overall in 2012 NBA Draft by Philadelphia 76ers Maurice (Moe) Harkless is leaving New York - pretty much a given - but he won't be far away. He was chosed 15th in the NBA Draft by the Philadelphia 76ers Thursday night at Prudential Center. After commissioner David Stern called his name - and, yes, he called him Maurice - he rose to his feet from his seat in the stands and was embraced by his brother Tyler, 7. His mother Rosa stood and clapped, as did Red Storm coach Steve Lavin. Harkless, the Big East's Newcomer of the Year for the 2011-12 season, is the first St. John's player drafted since Omar Cook went in the 2001 draft. The 19-year-old earned the conference accolades despite having to play out of position. Johnnies coach Steve Lavin and former assistant Mike Dunlap, now head coach of the Charlotte Bobcats, asked Harkless to play power forward and even occasionally center because the team lacked height. In the NBA, Harkless is more likely to play small forward. "What most teams told us was that they liked how smart he is," said Harkless advisor Nate Blue said. "He's tall but he has a guard's game. . . . He should play more facing the basket in the NBA." Harkless averaged 15.5 points and 8.6 rebounds in his only season with the Johnnies. On Wednesday he said he wasn't nervous, but anticipated he would be on Thursday as he waited to hear his name called. One thing he wasn't nervous about was who would choose him or where he might go during the first round. "I just care about going to a good team and being in a good situation," he said. "I don't care where I am drafted, I just want to be able to make the best of the situation I am in. . . . Whether I'm drafted 11 or 25, it doesn't make a difference to me." Optimally he said he would prefer a team where the opportunity for playing time would come either right away or in the near future. "I always say Boston would be best," he said of the Celtics, who were scheduled to pick at 21 and 22 in the first round. "A guy like Paul Pierce, I could learn a lot from him. I'd get to play with a great point guard like (Rajon) Rondo. And I'm sure that Paul Pierce, pretty soon he'll be done with the NBA and I'll be able to step in and get a lot of minutes then. I feel that would be a perfect situation for me." But he also felt that joining a team with few veterans could be a good scenario, even if it came with a longer-term blueprint for making the playoffs. "A team that rebuilding and young, that's still pretty cool for me," Harkless said.
