Moya captured his first title on Spanish soil. Moya, the No. 2 seed who reached the final in Barcelona two years ago before losing to countryman Juan Carlos Ferrero in a 4-hour marathon, claimed his first ATP title on home soil and his second of the season having won in Buenos Aires on clay in February. The 26-year-old from Palma de Mallorca, who also reached the final of the NASDAQ-100 Open in Miami before losing to Andre Agassi, now moves up to second position in the ATP Champions Race 2003. Watched by the "Excelentisimos Senores" Dukes of Palma among the packed crowd at the Real Club de Tenis, Moya recorded his second consecutive win over Safin and now leads their head-to-head series 3-2 overall. Safin, going for his second title in Barcelona following his victory there in 2000, broke Moya's serve in the 12th game of the first set. But Moya immediately hit back at the start of the second with a break of his own and began to take full control of the match. En route to his 13th career ATP title - and 11th on clay - Moya defeated Adrian Voinea, Dominik Hrbaty, Nikolay Davydenko and Agustin Calleri. Safin, making his first ATP appearance since Miami, overcame Salvador Navarro, Jarkko Nieminen, defending champion Gaston Gaudio and top seed Juan Carlos Ferrero. What the Players Said: Moya: "Barcelona is the title that every Spanish player wants to win together with a Grand Slam and a Tennis Masters Series event. "I am very happy. It is a different sensation to win a title here since I am playing in the Club where I spent many years and where I know a lot of people. I want to dedicate this title to the people that supported me and those who didn't as well. "It is very difficult to play Marat since he is a player that hits the ball very hard. I tried to change my strategy and started playing better in the second and third sets. Although it is disappointing to end a final with a retirement, I still have to be happy for the way I played and caused him to retire. "I am at the top level again and it is very difficult to take away the confidence from me at the moment. It has been very difficult to come back and now I am here for good and hopefully I will continue to produce good tennis and win more important tournaments. I hope that I broke the habit of not playing my best tennis here, in Rome and Hamburg and hopefully I can do well in order to get closer to the No. 1 spot." Safin: "I could not finish the match because I was extremely tired. I tried to perform my best and make a fast match but he played very well in the second and third sets. After that I ran completely out of strength and could not finish the match. "It was good anyway because I got some matches under my belt and defeated good players such as Gaudio and Ferrero, but it is also true that they took the strength I had for the week. Next week I will play in Valencia and try to have some more matches in order to be ready for Roma, Hamburg and Roland Garros which are very important tournaments. Overall it has been a great week for me after being out of competition during this past month." Bryan Brothers Win 10th Doubles Crown Third seeds Bob and Mike Bryan captured their 10th career ATP doubles title by defeating Chris Haggard and Robbie Koenig 6-4, 6-3 in the final of the Open Seat Godo in Barcelona. They now join Tim and Tom Gullikson's record of ten wins by two brothers. "The Gullikson brothers were a big example for us. We had the chance to meet them and they gave us a lot of advice. For this reason we wrote Tim's name in our shoes before the final and we dedicate this victory to him," said Bob. "We are still young and hopefully we will be able to extend this record further. We've played together since we were six and that is a big advantage for us as we know exactly what the other one is going to do." Barcelona is the duo's first title in 2003 in their third final (Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells and Memphis). BROTHERLY AFFAIR With the Barcelona title, the Bryan brothers tied the Gullikson brothers for the most career titles by a brother tandem in the Open Era (since 1968). Here are the leaders: Bob and Mike Bryan 10 Tom and Tom Gullikson 10 Anand and Vijay Amritraj 8 Gene and Sandy Mayer 5 Alvaro and Jamie Fillol 4 Luke and Murphy Jensen 4 -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.csie.ntu.edu.tw) ◆ From: 61.64.84.168 -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.csie.ntu.edu.tw) ◆ From: 61.230.100.92
