03 Oct 2004 - Barcelona - Faye Andrews
An ecstatic Spanish team lifted the Junior Davis Cup by BNP Paribas trophy on
home soil in front of a jubilant crowd of spectators at the Real Club de Polo
de Barcelona. The victory did not come easily against the Czech Republic boys
and there were some nerve-wracking moments for the crowds in the tribunes.
Roberto Bautista did not make the best start for Spain against Czech Republic’s
Miroslav Navratil. The first set passed rapidly with Baustista unable to get
into his stride against the towering Czech boy who took the set 61. In the
second set Bautista managed to stay on level terms for the first four games
but was broken in the fifth game and Navratil began to run away with the match.
At 5-2 in the second set the Spaniard managed to save two match points and
then held serve to get himself back into the match with Navratil tiring.
With Czech Republic serving for the match, Bautista was unable to put up any
more of a fight and Navratil secured the first point for Czech Republic.
With Pere Riba to follow against the strong Dusan Lojda things were not
looking good for Spain. Riba had lost his previous two singles matches, however
spurred on by an ever growing crowd the Riba played probably his best match of
the tournament. The match almost mirrored the first match by in reverser,
Riba ran away with the first set 61, and Lojda fought back to hold Riba in
the second set to 3-3 however a loose game from Lojda gave the break to Spain.
Both boys then held serve to bring the score to 5-3 with Riba serving for the
match. Lojda was not about to give up without a fight and saved two match
points before Riba set up his third match point with a fantastic drop shot
and finished off with an ace to wrap up the match 61 64.
Thus the title came down to the deciding doubles. Both Riba and Bautista
returned to the court to face Lojda and Filip Zeman. The crowd’s support
buoyed the Spanish team who combined to put on a fantastic display. The
quickly took control of the match, taking the first set 63. A decisive break
to lead 4-3 saw the title quickly approaching and a volley from the Spaniards
secured the title and the celebrations began.
Spanish captain Alejandro Aranda was delighted with his team.
“The are a great team, all of them are winners. They’ve worked so hard for
the last two months preparing for this competition and this week they have
lived up to everyone’s hopes and expectations.”
