Q. Now you play Friday against Richard. Of course, there will be not only
a full house, but it will be a very emotional game. Does it bother you
or you don't have a problem if you play here? You will be sure that
90% of the people will of course support Gasquet.
RAFAEL NADAL: No, I don't have problem, no. I play in Davis Cup and I think
is similar, no? I think is a nice match. We have the same age. I think is a
nice match, no?
I play in Monte-Carlo against him, and I won 6-3 in the third. But the match
is very tough. I will try play the same.
Q. What have been some examples of the attention you are getting from fans?
RAFAEL NADAL: (Translated from Spanish) Well, usually they congratulate me.
I mean, sometimes I get a letter or a fluffy toy.
(In English) In English, I think better not.
Q. First two sets against Malisse, very strong. He had only five groundstroke
winners against you. Do you sometimes on the court, a clay court particularly,
have the feeling that no one can hit the ball by you?
RAFAEL NADAL: I don't know. I only hope play -- I only think about my tennis.
I only think about play good, my tennis, and I don't think about the Malisse,
for example, today if he can't do winners. No, but I don't know.
Q. What was most difficult about Gasquet's game when you played him in
Monte-Carlo? What was the best part of his game?
RAFAEL NADAL: No, Gasquet have a very good backhand. No, I think he's
complete, no? He have all shots good. I don't know. I only will try play my
best tennis for win the match because he play very well, no?
Q. Gasquet said he hits the ball harder. Do you think he hits the ball
harder than you or do you think you hit the ball harder than him?
RAFAEL NADAL: Okay, good (smiling).
Q. Do you agree?
RAFAEL NADAL: Yeah, okay. If he say he play tough than me, okay.
Q. What will it be like playing a friend, an amigo?
RAFAEL NADAL: I play sometimes against a good friend when I was a little bit
young and when I play against Moya. Is different than another match, but
finally is only a competition and all players want won every match, and after
the match all is the same, no?
Q. Talking about Federer, you played a wonderful final in Key Biscayne
where you were up two sets. Tennis is not only the strengths and quality
of tennis, but very mental. Do you do anything to avoid this happening
again if you are leading so ??
RAFAEL NADAL: (Translated from Spanish) I understood the beginning of the
question, but not the end.
(In English.) I don't know, because in Miami is my first final, my first
important final, I play against the No. 1. When I lost the third set, I think
my mentally is a little bit down, no? So if now I play against Federer and I
have two sets to love and I lost the third, like the same form, I think I can
try won the match in the fourth or in the five, no? I think now I improve that.
No, if Federer play his best tennis, he's better I think.
THE MODERATOR: Spanish questions.
Q. How about that match on Friday? This could be an entirely different
match. You're going to face someone who is the absolute French idol in
tennis at the moment. You're going to be on central court with that
French crowd here in Roland Garros.
RAFAEL NADAL: Well, obviously it's going to be a complicated match. I faced
him in Monte-Carlo. Obviously, there's been Hamburg. Clearly he's in top shape,
and it's going to be his fans out there. It can be a positive or negative.
It's also pressure, and you've got to overcome that pressure when you're
playing in front of your own public.
I think really you've got to be able to overcome that pressure. I'm going to
go out there and try to play my best tennis. I'm going to try to keep up my
game. I'm sure I have a chance to win. That's the only thing I'm thinking of.
I'm going to try to play my best tennis. If he plays better and wins, you know,
that's it. I'll just go home.
Q. On the first day you were five up.
RAFAEL NADAL: Well, I think I've been improving. I think I'm in better
control of my shots. I might be a little bit short on my backhand at times,
but I feel much better. This morning when I was warming up, I was feeling
quite well. My serve worked very well during the match. I kept track of it
because sometimes my serve is a bit weak. But my serve was quite good and my
forehand was good, as well.
I think I might need a little bet more confidence, but I think I've improved
a lot and I'm really satisfied with that improvement. I think I can still
improve as days go by.
Q. You were talking about the pressure for Gasquet. I think in the
third set today, the crowd started to mention his name.
RAFAEL NADAL: Really? I thought they were saying Xavier. I don't know.
Q. You didn't have much experience here on central court at the
French Open. You looked like you felt entirely at home. How did you
adapt?
RAFAEL NADAL: Well, obviously it's very different to play on central court
here from Monte-Carlo, Rome, et cetera. It's a bit bigger. In the end it's
just a tennis match and the important thing is to feel at ease and play a
good game whatever court you're playing on. I felt very well today and that's
why I was able to win this match.
Q. Playing against Gasquet, is it different from any other player
because you're the same age, because you're somewhat rivals?
RAFAEL NADAL: We're not especially rivals. It's just the media who are looking
for rivalry and confrontation, particularly the French media. As far as I'm
concerned, there is no rivalry. Obviously, all the players want to be at the
top. That's all there is. Gasquet is a great player, but he's just a player
who wants to be at the top, and he's actually making it.
I mean, you've got to forget about everything else and go on to the court at
100% whoever your opponent is. Whether you've beaten Gasquet or anyone else,
you're through the round. I mean, apart from the fact that obviously he's a
very good player.
