Day 5 - Carlos Moya Interview
Friday, May 27, 2005
Q. Congratulations on your win today. Have you been paying attention
to what your friend Nadal is doing, and can you tell us a little bit
about your relationship with him.
CARLOS MOYA: Well, I didn't pay too much attention to the match. I been
watching few points, but I was concentrated on myself, which is enough
right now.
I am very good friend of him. We know each other for very long time.
Q. You've been kind of a mentor to him. He's practiced with you. Can you
tell us what his personality is like.
CARLOS MOYA: Yeah, he's like a kid. He's 18 years old. You don't feel
that on court, but of course, he shows that. So that's all what I can
say about him.
Q. Last year you had an easy win against Fernando. Today was very
different, especially after the third set. What was the difference
today?
CARLOS MOYA: Well, I think the difference, it could have been straight
sets today as well. But he's been playing much better than last year.
Last year, he was going down little bit, and now he's clearly going up
again.
So I think he has played much better than he was playing last year, and
he has improved his serve, I think. He was moving very well. You know, I
had a lot of trouble winning the points. So he has a very good touch, and
he runs a lot. So I think he's on the right way to come back where he was
before.
Q. Was the fourth set a sort of result of missing the matchpoints in the
third set?
CARLOS MOYA: Well, little bit of everything. I was disappointed 'cause
I had many chances in the third, and also my mind was not working very
well. I was thinking too much about that and also with my shoulder. So he
broke my serve right at the beginning, so I wanted to save energy for fifth.
And that's why I also called the trainer at the end of the fourth set. So
I wanted to put all my energy in that fifth set, and it worked pretty well.
Q. How is your shoulder? How do you feel your form is this year compared
to last perhaps?
CARLOS MOYA: Well, shoulder is fine. I have no pain at all. The thing is
that the muscles around the shoulder are working too much trying to avoid
the shoulder to work. So they do more effort than they used to do. So that's
what I've been told.
I feel like I have no power left when I hit few forehands. Or also with
my serve, it was tough for me to serve hard. But besides that, if I could
have won in straight sets, so the match was okay.
I been playing pretty well lately, I mean, this week. So I'll need little
bit of luck next match, I think.
Q. Next match is obviously an excellent one for the crowds. How do you
see that given the way your shoulder has been, the way you've been playing?
CARLOS MOYA: Well, the good thing, as I said before, is that I don't have
any pain at all.
So what I have to do is get treatment and make it stronger in couple of
days, be very concentrate, very focused. Obviously, I think he's the
favorite, but you never know what can happen. He's playing very well.
He didn't lose any set, I think. So I'll have to play very well to beat
him.
Q. If you could pick a surface to play him, I guess it would be clay? If
you could choose a surface on which to play him, I guess it would be clay?
CARLOS MOYA: Well, it wouldn't be grass for sure (smiling). Yeah, it would
be clay and it would be five sets. So I never beat him before, but for
everything there has to be a first time. I'll try to rest these two days.
And not today, but from tomorrow, I will start to focus on that match. I
think it's going to be very important for me. I think if he gets to the
quarters, he becomes favorite.
But the first three, four rounds, he should have problems. He didn't have
them yet, so hopefully it's gonna be on Sunday.
Q. Will you feel less pressure now? It's the fourth round, he's the No. 1
in the world. Your goal was maybe the first round. Will you feel less
pressure for this next match?
CARLOS MOYA: Well, I feel less pressure, but I don't want to feel that
way too often 'cause I been playing for many years having the pressure,
and it's something that you have to accept and is a good sign because
that means that you playing well and that you should win.
It's like ? I don't know ? I don't like to play with no pressure at all
because that means that the opponent is favorite. But having that, I'll
have to take advantage of not being favorite and try to play relaxed and
try to play my best tennis.
THE MODERATOR: Spanish questions, please.
Q. It's impressive how you lost four matchpoints, but Fernando is a
friend. Did you forget about that? Was the heat a factor today?
CARLOS MOYA: Well, no, it's not because he was my friend that I lost those
opportunities, you know. That sort of thing happens in sport and it happens
in tennis in particular.
After losing the third set, mentally I wasn't feeling too well. He served
very quickly. Very quickly.
I tried to save energy for the fifth set. Maybe I was thinking too much
about those points, I was thinking too much about my shoulder as well.
And it took me a little time to react.
But in the fifth set I was a little lucky. Of course the game could have
been different, but I decided really to bet on the fifth set.
Q. Compared to Federer, we can see that your serve maybe is slower. But
this is clay, so maybe it's not that important.
CARLOS MOYA: Well, my game relies on my serve to a great extent, but
it's difficult sometimes with my backhand, I've got to look after my
shoulder. That's something I have to bear in mind.
The good thing is it doesn't hurt, it's not painful. It's just that I'm
using the muscles around my shoulder a little more. I can't serve maybe
100% or my forehands won't be 100%. But with a good massage, with my trainer
helping me, I think things will improve and my serve will probably be
better at the next match.
Q. Maybe you'll need an "infiltracion" for your shoulder?
CARLOS MOYA: No, I don't think I'll need that. Not for the time being.
I did this in Barcelona after Hamburg. I don't think it's a very good
thing. If I win on Sunday, if I'm in the quarterfinals, and if my shoulder
is hurting, I might consider having an "infiltracion." But as I said before,
I don't feel any pain in my shoulder. It's just that the muscles aren't
used to being called upon so much. That's the situation right now.
Q. Do you think you can play 100% against Federer, in particular as far
as your serve is concerned?
CARLOS MOYA: Well, let's see how I react tomorrow. Let's see how I feel
tomorrow. Maybe yes.
During the first two matches my serve was all right; it was acceptable.
So I think that tomorrow I'll try to rest and to get some treatment for
my shoulder, and really I'm going to have to give it my all.
Serving like that against Federer, it's going to be complicated. I need
to win as many winners as possible, and I need to use my backhand. And if
I can't be 100%, I'll have to run more, work more on each point, and I'm
not used to playing that way.
Q. Federer said that you don't really seem to be very fit. He said he's
afraid of nobody. He said he thinks he can win this tournament and he's
afraid of nobody. Do you think his mental strength is bigger than yours?
CARLOS MOYA: Well, he doesn't have many doubts. He's only lost two matches
so far this year. Obviously, he's feeling very confident. His serve is
better than me right now, better forehand, better backhand, better serve
and volley. The thing is I've won here already, which he hasn't. That
might have some influence.
So in any case I'll try to play my best. I'll try to use the experience
that I have. He might be the favorite, but, you know, I think on Sunday
it's better to play that much on Sunday rather than in the semifinals or
finals or at another stage.
So in any case I will try to use the circumstances to the best of my
advantage.
Q. What about the temperature, the heat?
CARLOS MOYA: I prefer a fast game because with the serve, I could maybe
harm him more. Also my backhand could put him into trouble. It's difficult
to move him from the baseline, so I think that I need a fast court. With a
bit of luck, we have a day like today with heat.
Q. In Houston, at the beginning of the third set on hard courts, you win
the second and you were dominating in the third. Federer can fear you as
well. We shall see what happens here. You have never played him on clay.
CARLOS MOYA: In Hamburg.
Q. So you never had an advantage?
CARLOS MOYA: No, the thing is he shouldn't break at the beginning. In
Houston, I had opportunities in the third set that I didn't really manage
to use to my advantage.
In any case, each match is different. You can't really compare, you know,
different tournaments. I know that he is playing better than most players,
and he might have a bad day, you know, and I might win.
Q. When it's 25 degrees, 30 degrees, is there problems in terms of getting
dehydrated?
CARLOS MOYA: Well, yeah, maybe. On the court I was feeling a little maybe
weak at the beginning. It was very hot. Then after that it was okay. It's
true that it affects you in the long run without you sometimes noticing.
Today has been a tough day mentally, physically, and the heat played a
major role, I think, in that.
