Day 5 - An interview with Tommy Robredo
Thursday, June 1, 2006
Q. How would you analyze this match?
TOMMY ROBREDO: Well, I think this was a tough match. It was a good match.
This was a complicated opponent. He's got a strong serve. Also he's a good
baseliner, very strong baseliner. He didn't really give me a lot of openings.
It was a difficult match, but I stayed concentrated.
In the third set yesterday I was leading, but he played very well in the
third set. I was not able to make a break earlier. I lost the third set. But
then in the fourth set, I managed to break. That turned the match in my
favor, so I'm very happy.
I'll have to rest this afternoon and play again tomorrow.
Q. You had two days' rest, now you're going to have to play matches days in
succession.
TOMMY ROBREDO: Well, I already complained about this yesterday to the
authorities here at the tournament. I didn't think this was the right
decision. I mean, you can't have a match on Sunday and then one on Wednesday
knowing it might rain. My opponent also had played on Sunday. I complained. I
was told I was probably right.
There was a question yesterday about whether we would play or not. I had
preferred not to start that match knowing it was getting dark and we would
probably not finish, knowing what the quality of my opponent was. I prefer to
play an entire match in a single day. In a difficult match, physically it
makes a difference.
I was told, listen, there's an hour and a half of light left, you have to
start. Anyway, I started playing. I was leading, so I was happy. It's a pity
I lost that third set.
In the end, it all worked out well for me because this was a good training
for me. I played a little more than an hour, so I'll be rested for tomorrow.
Q. Are you going to ask to be put on last tomorrow?
TOMMY ROBREDO: No. I don't think I'd be paid much attention to. Sometimes
it's strange because they pay attention to some details, and they leave aside
obvious things. Someone who played on Sunday shouldn't play last on Wednesday
because he might not play at all, then you've had three days' rest in a Grand
Slam. We're not used to two, so three is probably even worse.
It is the first time they had this situation and they didn't know how to deal
with it.
Q. You have a not so well-known opponent next round.
TOMMY ROBREDO: I don't know him very well. I asked my father to have a look
at him, watch him play yesterday. I was surprised that Acasuso lost. Acasuso
is a very good player. He's been playing very good this year. He was leading
and then he lost. He lost the last two sets easily. Of course, I asked my
father. I'll ask a few players who have played him before.

I'm generally satisfied with the next round. I mean, Acasuso would be a
difficult opponent. This one beat him, so he's probably good. I'd rather play
him than Acasuso.
Q. Did losing the third set create any doubt in your mind?
TOMMY ROBREDO: No. I didn't doubt because I lost the third set. I doubted
because he wasn't missing any shots. He was playing a strong game. There was
a point which really changed that set. We were 1-1. He was playing very well.
He got a breakpoint. On my second serve, he had a good return. I think he
benefited from the wind. After that, I played very well. I got some breathing
room. He started to play less well.
It wasn't a matter of doubt. This is a very good player. He plays very
aggressive. He really goes after every shot. At that point I really regained
control.
