Spain win despite one more Chiudinelli effort
After two consecutive first round losses in the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas,
Spain has advanced to the quarterfinals again. Fernando Verdasco gave the
visitors the unassailable 3-1 lead against Switzerland by comfortably beating
Stephane Bohli 63 63 62 in the fourth rubber.
A valiant final effort from Marco Chiudinelli gave Switzerland a second point
at the conclusion of the weekend. The 25-year-old from Basel defeated David
Ferrer in the dead fifth rubber 36 63 63 to settle the score in Geneva 3-2 to
Spain.
Chiudinelli once again showed that he is much stronger than his ranking of
137 might indicate. Despite the final result being sealed, him being tired
after eight hours of competition on the two previous days and being one set
down, he managed to beat a player who is ranked 122 spots higher than
himself.
"Neither of us wanted to lose. It was a high-quality match and I am happy to
have come through," Chiudinelli said, adding that "at the moment,
disappointment prevails. But I'll see in the next days what I have done here.
I am very happy to have proved that I can play on a very high level."
Swiss can boast four top players
Despite the loss being tough, Switzerland can take positive points from this
weekend. The team now is as deep as never before. With Stanislas Wawrinka,
Chiudinelli, doubles specialist Yves Allegro, and of course Roger Federer, the
Swiss have for the first time four players that are capable of winning
matches in the World group on a consistent basis. Allegro is confident for
the future: "Without Roger, we have a team that can stay in the World Group.
With him, we can aim at the title. I think we have a bright future ahead."
First, however, it will be important to remain among the Worlds elite for a
third consecutive time. Of course, help from the world's top tennis player
would be greatly appreciated and Severin Luthi is quite optimistic: "It's too
early to look that far ahead but I believe that the chances are good that
he'll be playing."
Relief for Spain
After having avoided the "negative three-peat" of consecutive first-round
losses in 2005, 2006 and 2007, the relief was big in the Spanish camp as
Captain Emilio Sanchez points out: "It was a very difficult tie, especially
with the way Chiudinelli played, and I'm happy that we made it. We have
finally won away from home after struggling for a few years."
Despite the win, the team was clear about the fact that the qualification for
the second round was the best achievement of the tie with the standard of
tennis not always having met highest requirements. Sanchez: "We'll have to
play much better in the United States than we did here if we want to have a
chance."
The revenge on the 2004 Final, won by Spain on home soil in Seville, will
most definitely be a major challenge as Patrick McEnroe's players will likely
opt for a very quick surface as well. For Rafael Nadal it is clear who will
be the favourite in the beginning of April: "The Americans. They are very
strong, and the doubles will be almost impossible to win."
