F. Lopez - 26 June
Tuesday, 26 June, 2007
Feliciano Lopez (ESP) beat Joshua Goodall (GBR) 6-1, 6-4, 6-4
Q. Are you looking forward to taking on Mr. Henman?
FELICIANO LOPEZ: (Laughing) yeah, it's going to be an interesting match, I
think. He just won a tough match against Moya. I saw a few points on TV, so I
know it's going to be tough. The crowd is going to be very noisy. But I think
the crowd here, they respect a lot of the players. So it's also a good
motivation for me to have home crowd with him. But of course it's going to be
tough at the same time.
Q. Do you enjoy that feeling, probably the whole nation is going to be
against you?
FELICIANO LOPEZ: Yeah, sure, sure. It's one of these matches that you always
want to play. To play him on Centre Court or Court 1 here is of course going
to be nice, a match to enjoy, and of course to try to win, no? It's one of
these matches that you never forget.
Q. Do you think it will be five sets or fewer this time? There normally are
five sets with Henman, aren't there?
FELICIANO LOPEZ: It's tough to say now. It's tough to say how is going to be
the match. He's a good player on grass, and I just have to focus on myself
and be ready for the match. It's one of these matches that you have to play
100 percent, otherwise you're going to lose. At the moment I just want to
think about playing good and keep going with my game, and that's all. I don't
want to think about any other things now.
Q. The match being as big as it will be, they'll be in favor of Henman, will
you feel like the bull or the matador?
FELICIANO LOPEZ: (Laughing) I don't know. I mean, it's tough to say, as I
said before.
Q. Have you played Tim much before?
FELICIANO LOPEZ: I've played him, yeah, a few times. I played him in Dubai
and lost. Last time I played him I won, in Las Vegas this year, tough match,
7 5 in the third or 7 6 in the third, I don't remember. I knew already it's
going to be tough, and even more here in Wimbledon. Good game for grass, he's
always had the ability to put pressure on the other guy. It's always
difficult to play against him.
Q. Have you had experience at other Grand Slams of playing the local hero
kind of thing?
FELICIANO LOPEZ: I played once against Kuerten in the French Open, and the
whole crowd was with him. Looks like it was friends. We played the finals,
Davis Cup in Australia there, doubles, but no. In the US Open I've never
beaten any American guy, and here I've never played Henman. It's the first
time. I think I should play against him once, the first time I play here. I
lost to Andre Sa in the fourth round. I think I should have won this match to
meet him on the courts. But now tomorrow I will have the opportunity to play
against him here, so it's going to be nice.
Q. Commentators are saying that it's a good time to play Henman, he's not as
strong as he used to be, and at 32 perhaps he's getting less strong. Is that
true, or how do you see him?
FELICIANO LOPEZ: Well, you never know. Of course now he's not in good shape
compared to a few years before when he was in the top ten. But still a very
strong player, even more on grass. I think the ranking doesn't say many
things in matches because he's playing Wimbledon, he's going to be motivated
and the whole crowd with him. So that's you know, it's tough to say that now
with thinking it's going to be easier because he's in the 18 ranking.
Q. Are you aware of how the whole country seems to stop to watch him play on
the television and everything?
FELICIANO LOPEZ: Yeah, this is nice. I think it's part of Wimbledon, no, and
part of tennis. The stories of Wimbledon and of Henman here, and I think all
the things that have been part of this tournament for many years already and
are going to continue in the same way. This is why Wimbledon maybe is the
most important tournament in the world.
Q. Do you have a plan of how you will play against him?
FELICIANO LOPEZ: Plan?
Q. Yeah, tactics?
FELICIANO LOPEZ: On grass it's difficult, no? I have to serve good, that's
for sure. And then, you know, we will see how things are going on the court.
If I win all the time my serve, it's going to be difficult for him. But I
also have to pay attention when he's serving and be ready to get all the
opportunities he will give me. For sure there will not be that many.
Q. Do you think there may be too much pressure on him and that might help you
because you have nothing to lose?
FELICIANO LOPEZ: Well, I'm not sure if he has a lot of pressure right now.
Maybe he got more a few years ago, before when he was the British star, no,
and everybody was hoping him to win. Now he's, you know, maybe he play one
Wimbledon more or two more Wimbledons, and he's got pressure. But at the same
time, he's playing maybe the last time here and he really enjoys playing.
Q. It would be nice to be the man who puts him out for his last ever
appearance if it is, a moment in history?
FELICIANO LOPEZ: Hopefully it's going to be a good win for me if I beat
Henman here. You never know. Let's see what happens and then we'll talk about
it.
Q. So the bull then?
FELICIANO LOPEZ: Yeah, the bull (laughter).
Q. You've been to quarterfinals here?
FELICIANO LOPEZ: Yeah.
Q. So you don't mind playing on grass?
FELICIANO LOPEZ: Yeah, I love playing on grass. I really like it.
