The Thailand Open tennis tournament suffered a blow yesterday when world number
two Rafael Nadal of Spain pulled out because of a knee injury. Nadal, who has
won three grand slam events, is at home in Mallorca receiving treatment for
tendonitis in his left knee, which he suffered from in the recent US Open.
Another Spanish player, David Ferrer who is currently world number eight has
also withdrawn from the tournament.
There are still plenty of top stars in the $550,000 event at Muang Thong Thani
including Andy Roddick, Tommy Haas, Novak Djokovic, Dmitry Tursunov, Carlos
Moya and Ivo Karlovic.
The main draw gets underway tomorrow.
In a written statement read by ATP supervisor, Tom Barnes, Nadal apologised for
withdrawing from the tournament.
He wrote: "As you probably know, I had a knee injury during the US Open and
hoped that it would clear up for the Thailand Open. Unfortunately that is not
the case. I have been advised to rest my knees for at least another few weeks."
Nadal said he was sorry he had disappointed his Thai fans and hoped to play
in next year's event.
Nadal's withdrawal means world number three, Novak Djokovic from Serbia becomes
the tournament top seed. He will face the Russian, Igor Kunitsyn in the first
round. World number five, Andy Roddick who is second seed, will face the
Taiwanese wild card, Wang Yeu-Tzuoo in the first round.
Two Thai players have received a wild card - Danai Udomchoke and Kittipong
Wachiramanowong.
World University Games champion, Danai will face a qualifier in the first round
but if he advances he will meet either Germany's Benjamin Becker or the
Spaniard, Moya.
Kittipong faces a tough first round match against world number 10 from the
Czech Republic, Tomas Berdych.
World number 11, Tommy Haas, will take on American Vincent Spadea.
Thailand number one, Paradorn Srichaphan who withdrew from the tournament
some time ago, said it was a pity Nadal would not be playing but there were
plenty of fine players competing.
He said Danai ought to get past the first round but would face a tough second
round match.
He said the tournament would be good experience for Kittipong. "It will be good
for him to play Tomas (Berdych). He has nothing to lose."
Although Paradorn is not playing he will help with the announcing and
commentary.
