MINNEAPOLIS — The notebook seems to follow Sean Sweeney everywhere: from
Spurs coaches’ meetings, to film sessions, to one-one-one pow-wows with
players.

summer, one of the first items on his to-do list was to put together a staff.

part of a staff that guided the Mavericks to a Finals berth in 2024. During
that run, Sweeney developed defenses that toppled the Timberwolves and the
Oklahoma City Thunder, the Spurs’ opponent in the next round should they
survive this one.

Sweeney’s contributions have been schematic, designing defenses for
individual games as well as devising in-game adjustments on the fly.

State, demonstrating for the sixth-year pro the defensive player he could
still become in the NBA.
